Meet Orley J. Pacheco

Today we’d like to introduce you to Orley J. Pacheco.

Orley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My whole story begins in a distant place called Brooklyn, New York. Brooklyn has always been home to me, but as time would tell. It would be only the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime. I started off my career at Goldman Sachs as an intern through an alliance my high school had, Murry Bergtraum High School. Then the Tuesday that changed the lives of everyone on planet earth happened, September 11th, 2001. I was bound to change direction of my career and my life. I ultimately enlisted with the United States Marine Corps and never looked back.

I loved my times with the Marine Corps! I was sent to Parris Island, South Carolina, for basic training – boot camp and my military career begun. I was stationed in Florida, North Carolina, California and I ended back in New York City… back in Brooklyn! By the time of my transition, eight years since raising my right hand, I had deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, been on several humanitarian missions and even worked closely to expand the relations between the communities that we recruit from through the Marine Corps Toys for Tots.

That was not exactly easy. Some of the gentlemen that I served with and myself purchased a business and we exited in positive territory during the Great Recession. I got an in right away back into financial services and started in Life Insurance. I had a great mentor, a person that I remember when I joined his team, he told me: “I had it in me. That it would be my turn in due time”. And he was right! He pointed me and encouraged me to complete a started item that I left open the entire time, my undergraduate degree.

I went to Fairleigh Dickinson University, went to school seven days a week and I continued to do consulting work in financial services. At this time now, I began volunteering in a leadership capacity with the leading diversity organization in the nation, ALPFA. Through service to the community with ALPFA, I started giving back to the organization by driving its mission and vision of building leaders and having an impact that reached thousands of people across the United States. It also served as my gateway to get recognized by a long time sponsor of ALPFA, The Bank of New York Mellon.

BNY Mellon hired me into a management training program and that exposure took me all around the United States and again, an international exposure. It was there, again, through a mentor that told me I had what it takes to be a distinguished wealth management executive. My experience, dealing with diverse people and being philanthropic all led my team to encourage me to further my education. I always had a dream of going to Cornell University. Going to school on the weekends in their executive program, I graduated with a Masters of Business Administration from the Johnson School of Business at Cornell University and a Masters of Business Administration from The Queen’s University in Canada.

At the bank, I got promoted and it took me away from wealth management. But I had a calling… I had to go back. I decided to leave the bank and started in a wealth management business to start up again from the bottom and build a new business! The ride has been nothing short but exciting! I work with people, bring them financial peace of mind and it never feels like work. I love doing what I do!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Never been a smooth road! 9/11 Deploying to the Middle East, Moving across the United States, Getting Told NO by employers after the service, Transition, Barriers in Education, Starting a Business x2.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
