Elanese, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been singing since I was little girl. I used to beg my mom take me to every audition I could find. I started performing in local competitions and talent shows around South Florida. I also started to meet some local music producers along the way, and fell in love with being in the studio and writing music. While I was in school, I would drive down to Miami three times a week for my six hour studio sessions, get home late, and then wake up super early to get to class in the mornings, all I ever wanted to do was sing. Being in the studio for that many hours a week really helped me sharpen my writing skills and experiment with who I was as an artist. When I was attending college at FAU, I got the opportunity to audition for a televised singing competition. Being on Television was a life changing experience for me, and shortly after I moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue my music career.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think anything worthwhile in life involves obstacles. One of my biggest obstacles was having to leave my family in Miami when I moved to LA. We’re very close knit, and moving to a brand new city by myself felt strange, not to mention lonely. I’m fortunate that my parents are very supportive of my dreams and encouraged me to take the leap even if it meant they wouldn’t see me as much.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I would describe my music as a blend of R&B, Pop and a hint of Latin. I’m heavily influenced by 90’s and 2000s R&B, and I’m also Dominican/Puerto Rican so sometimes I find myself gravitating towards using sounds from old Spanish songs and Spanish phrases. I love salsa music, I love big voices, and I love sampling older songs. It’s a mix of different elements of my personality. I try not to limit myself to one genre and just write according to what mood I’m in on any given day.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment thus far has been being able to sing on national television. There was so much amazing talent on the show, and being around all of these incredible artists really inspired me to pursue my passion. I’ll never forget the experience. I’ve learned a lot about the industry and have made a lot of friends along the way.
