Meet D’yani Thomas of Dolled By Dee in Liberty City

Today we’d like to introduce you to D’yani Thomas.

D’yani, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I first started doing hair on myself when I was 14 years old, in ninth grade. I got tired of having to wait on people or pay high amounts so I decided to learn how to braid my own hair. After a couple of months, I started to perfect my craft. In September 2019, I officially began offering my services to everyone because I felt like I had gotten better and had been doing it long enough that I can profit off of it. Although my business is very small, the support from friends, family, and even strangers makes it seem so big.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been very hard getting to where I am now. It seemed to me that nobody wanted to pay high prices for their hair so I lowered my prices to gain some kind of clientele. I find myself lowering my prices or doing specials every couple of months to gain clientele.

We’d love to hear more about Dolled By Dee.
Dolled By Dee is a hair business ran mostly in my home, for now. I do plaits and braids. I specialize in plaits, which I can say is probably my neatest work. I am most proud of the progress I have made in almost two years. What sets me apart from others is how hard I try as a hairstylist to accompany my customers and their needs.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career would be finally releasing my booking website. I’m still having minor problems, but being able to have all questions answered in one place is a big deal to me.
