Meet Mystix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mystix.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mystix. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was just a punk chick who went to Miami Senior High, I always wanted to be in a band and brought my guitar for friends to play while I freestyled after school. I started trying out for bands because I wanted to be a lead singer, all the bands I would try out for had a certain “look” they were going for, white skinned, emo hair.. so every time I tried out for bands they would choose the person who fit the “image”.

In 2012, I tried out for a punk band that was just forming, they had no real image in mind and were just looking for a strong vocalist. I was in chorus all my life, knew how to play piano, and also had vocal lessons, we also liked the same bands so we clicked… I came up with the name “The Phobia, we ended up going with Das Phobia” At the time my name was “Pixie” we performed at a lot of different venues including, Churchills, Sweat Records, The Ball and Chain, Club Eve, Florida Supercon (Anime Convention), School of Rock and more…

I had so much more I wanted to talk about in my music so I was looking for another outlet, I had made friends with a local rapper named Traumatize, who influenced me to start rapping. I bought a mic and started recording music rapping in English and Japanese.

That’s when…My mission became to enlighten myself and others through music and art.

I released my single “Kyoshokusho” Produced by GhostMoneys in 2012 in a mixtape called “Manifest”, I edited a music video and released it on YouTube. Kyoshokusho means Anorexia in Japanese, this is an uplifting song that is supposed to help uplift those going through the same feelings I went through when I was not eating due to low self-esteem… It became a song that helped me begin to eat more… I released other songs like “Kirai” and “Who the fuck are you”…For a while, I performed at different clubs in Miami with Traumatize throughout the year, The Nest, The Hangar 305, Grand Central, PAX Miami, Club Eve, … just to name a few…

I was producing very little and started to get interested in making my own beats. I broke up with my band because I had to move to Chicago and was unable to stay connected for our shows.

I released two more projects produced by different producers, Crystal Spirits and Dream-Land…

When I came back to Miami, I started working on a new solo and joint project and began performing again with Traumatize. We released an EP together produced by SpaceGhostPurrp called “Parables” Then I released “Bruja” an EP where the song titles are based on Crystals I had a connection with. I released a music video called “Obsidian”…

I started to dabble in production and created the song “Why” one day while playing the keys on FL Studio. I realized then I really wanted to start producing my own music. Traumatize helped me become aware of different hardware that I could use so I started to investigating hardware and eventually started investing in different machines, I tried out stuff from Teenage Engineering, Roland and Korg. I started releasing video performances on Youtube, creating music with these instruments. I didn’t know if there was any real movement going on in Miami with hardware.

With the help of my friend and musician Sofilla, I got booked to a show at Kill Your Idol and performed live with my instruments for the first time, I was basically a one woman band, with a bass synthesizer, Drum synthesizer, FM Synth, Vocoder and Sampler. I performed songs from my first experimental instrumental album “Angel Numbers” as well as some song from Bruja. I gave out Crystals to the people in the venue that were most interested in the performance. It was my first paid electro/rap gig in Miami and I was stoked. The host of that performance, Patrick, told me to check out this event called “Synth Battle” at Gramps.

That’s where I met Gabo.Rio and Marsi (Discosexo), it was an event that they hosted and DJ’d at. They were really understanding, cool and sweet, It was never intimidating performing at Gramps. I didn’t really know anyone but wanted to perform so bad, I performed some new stuff on my Volcas and filmed all my performances. They saw potential in my performances and I got invited to BlueRoomDance Hall by Gabo and Discosexo to perform during Art Basel and I also met different people at Gramps and CTRL, OPT or Angelo connected me to Caro, the coordinator of different events in Technique Records, she booked me for a show and I performed at Technique.

I was happy to get the chance to perform at these spots not knowing people well, relying on my talent to have them want me to come back. I was suggested to perform at International Noise Conference at Churchills and it was my first big event as an electronic artist. It went really well and I met a lot of new people.

Right now I am working on a new Album called Anomaly, it will be released with a digital comic all drawn by myself. The theme is a secret! I’m featuring different artists from Florida to California to be on this Album. It is produced by Swedish Producer DJOMMN. I’m also releasing an EP produced by myself with my instruments called “考え” Thoughts in Japanese. With singles I have performed live with my instruments.. the songs are called “Lucky” “The Game” and more. I’ll also be releasing a music video for my last EP’s song “Rose Quartz” in a few weeks.

The last album I released was Called “Angel Numbers” all of the tracks are named after a different angel number that I felt fit the vibe of the song. They are experimental instrumental songs with some dialogue and lyrics. I experimented with singing bowls to help align your chakra with the music. All types of different people tell me they use these songs for dancing, doing yoga, in yoga classes, practicing singing and rapping, driving and more. It really makes me happy that my music can be the theme song to someone else’s experiences.

During this quarantine, I have been working on new music and still performing live through live-streaming with different companies. I live-streamed with @harnesscommunity, a magazine and publishing company. I also recently did a stream with Technique Records.

I just want to continue to grow as an artist and share my music with more people in the future.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I struggled with racism while searching for a band to pick me as a singer in the beginning of my journey. It was really discouraging and made me feel like I would never be good enough or the image people are looking for. I also struggled with finding places to perform and people who would book me and still do. Sometimes people won’t respond to an email, other times people respond and give you chance. What I learned was to continue to try until you make a route for yourself. No matter what, you can overcome any obstacles.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am an artist all around, apart from making music, I make a lot of other different things. I design and do branding for CBD companies. I edit music videos for artists and myself. I do logos for different artists as well as piercing companies and wellness companies. I also paint, make earrings and sometimes sell sage bundles…

I have a show called Vintage Cruis’n USA where I go thrifting across the US, Feature different Vintage items, bikes and cars. I animated the intro myself as well as edit all the episodes. Right now, I am starting Season 3 of the series! You can tune in on YouTube!

I am proud of the versatility I have being able to try different things and create something from them. As an artist, it’s hard for me to get noticed amongst so many talented people trying to become something.

I pride myself in doing different things to set myself apart from other people. I believe my versatility also sets me apart from others. Being able to make my ideas come to life and use the talents I’ve learned through my schooling and career to manifest the things I think about doing.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think everyone has a different definition of success… My definition of success is achieving my mission. If my music and art enlighten myself and also I get told by others that it helps them… I will consider myself successful.

I do sometimes get people reaching me out about my work and that’s what really makes me feel successful.. or when I crave to listen to a song or look at a piece of art I made.
