Meet Massimo Hanozet

Today we’d like to introduce you to Massimo Hanozet.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Massimo. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up in Italy and loved photography since I was a teen. After school, I used to walk home and stopping in front of a film studio that looked like magic-land to me. I ended up being a very young intern, helping everyone, from the production assistants to the director. Lights and cameras were my things and I was constantly looking at the world around me, the perpetual contrast of lights and shadows. No wonder my first and strong influence was the use of “Chiaro-Scuro” in lighting, that came from hours of looking at the Renaissance paintings hanging in the Church where my grandma used to drag me every Sunday.

I started out as a camera assistant, then focus puller, then camera operator, and around the 90’s I started my DP career, working around the globe with many talented directors especially American, so the decision to settle in New York first and then Miami.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been very much of a smooth road, remember back in the days when I started my career, everything was filmed in FILM, so there was no mistake allowed: you really had to be very good at what you were doing, both technically and aesthetically. Also, unlike today, getting into the film market was for very few: there was no school where you learned the basics, but you could get in only by showing your goodwill and your good attitude. Once you got in, then you had to keep up and build your career step by step, as I did in the Camera department. It took me years before I was allowed to look through the camera viewfinder!

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I m a Director of Photography and Videographer. As a freelance, I work with different crews, directors and clients all the time, not only in Miami or Us but also Europe, Vietnam, Japan… every project is different and even if you apply your experience and skills, you always end up learning something new on every job. I think my “specialization” is being able to handle different cameras, from film to digital aerial and underwater, and using past and present technology: my film background allows me to experiment more, mixing in some old styles to new styles and techniques. I am very grateful and I love my job especially the fact I can apply and create something different in every project. Useless to say, I love pushing myself in new challenges and explore new possibilities and combinations.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Love your job and dive in full energy in every project. Be creative and try to make each project different from the last one. Try to be original all the time.
