Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Yancar.
Steve, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m originally from Florida and went to grad school in NYC to get my MFA – focus in Video & Drawing. I moved to Miami and randomly started filming fishing tournaments for a boat called “SWAGGER”. Pretty soon after starting to do the tournaments, the owner Dan and I decided to start a brand based around the boat and the videos called “Swagger Fishing Co.” We had a variety of clothing, accessories, threw events, and had a pop-up type shop in Wynwood for a while. I managed everything from the brand to content creation for about 5+ years and then the boat sold.
During grad school and throughout managing Swagger Fishing Co, I always was making my own stuff (artwork, videos, some clothes) under the name “PRÆCH”. So when the boat sold, I decided to make PRÆCH into a full-time job and go freelance under PRÆCH Productions LLC. I got a few new filmers on board with me and a few of the old Swagger Fishing Co guys are involved as well. In a way Swagger Fishing developed and turned into PRÆCH Productions along with some new additions and a focus on my own personal style/aesthetic when it comes to filming/editing/designing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a lot of hard work. A lot of uncertainty. Most of all, it is and has been a constant hustle. You never can let your foot off the gas, so to speak. Being freelance allows for so much freedom but it also can be very unnerving not knowing what/if something lies ahead.
All that being said, I think all the hard work has paid off. At the end of the day I get to do what I love, with the people I love. I’ve built a lot of close relationships over the years and get to travel all over the world.
Please tell us about PRÆCH Productions.
PRÆCH at its core is a group of like-minded creatives. Surrounding yourself with different types of people allows you to constantly bring new perspectives and ideas to the table. Personally, I grew up surfing and skating so that background definitely lends itself to my style while filming. I guess the aesthetic of our work is fast, raw, and a little rough around the edges… just how we like it.
PRÆCH Productions provides creative direction in the form of video, photo, design and management of content.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
We’re a group of hustlers. I am constantly working, thinking, making… and on my days off I’m working on side projects. We all have that type of drive and I think that’s what ultimately leads to success.
