Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Carbonell.
Christy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), Behavioral Consultant and Coach and the Owner of Behavioral Resources and Innovations (BRI) which I founded in 2016. But have been in the field of helping others lead meaningful lives for over 20 years. I am also a board-approved supervisor and CEU provider for behavior analysts and those pursuing board certifications. I have dedicated my life to helping people make positive life changes. My approach to changing lives is always based on positive means. Which I’m often told is not typical of what they are used to doing.
I’ve worked in public and private schools and have started several autism schools and programs for children and adults. Early on in my career, I also specialized in social work, counseling and psychological services, where I conducted anger management groups for children, teens and adults. I also provided counseling services for families dealing with substance abuse/addiction and those who had children who were truant from school or had a history of running away from home.
I later began my focus on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) during my time working on a project funded by the University of South Florida (USF). Another passion of mine is working with persons with autism and other special needs from children to adults, in particular those who have severe behavioral problems. But I also love teaching new skills to others as I am also an educator.
This is why we will soon be launching our new e-learning academy (bri-elearning.teachable.com) to help as many people as possible! With the limited time we all have available in our crazy busy lives, I found this as a way to be able to reach more people and give them the knowledge to help them in their own life journey.
My minor in communication has made it so that a goal in all my courses is to make you the best communicator you can be to help nurture the positive life changes you want to attain. I am lucky to have been given the opportunity to pursue such a wide range interest in my life and I want to share my knowledge with you!
Has it been a smooth road?
Some of the challenges I’ve encountered in my journey is being able to help people who often don’t have the time or money to be able to receive my services. So I have been working hard throughout the years writing grants for organizations I’ve worked with to be able to provide free services. I have also contracted with agencies who provide free services so I can help those in need despite their ability to fund their services. The e-learning academy we are launching is a way to help meet this challenge as it will have a large range of topics; some will be free so I can continue with my mission of spreading the word to as many people as possible.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I have dedicated my life to helping people make positive life changes, so my approach to changing lives is always based on positive means. This is usually not the way most people are used to doing things, as I’m often told its new to them. My career began working with runaway teens and children who would skip school. It was tough to get the families back on track, but this experience really helped me become a great communicator, which has helped me in all aspects of my career.
I also worked in foster care and would teach an ABA based parent training curriculum to a group of foster parents who did not want to be in the class; but were required to do so. It was an intensive 30-hour course. We met for three hours, 6 pm-9 pm once a week for ten weeks. They were a tough bunch. Not happy to be there. But by the end of the course would commend how much it helped them and made huge changes in the way they did things. So I learned how to teach people in a very simple, down to earth and positive way. I have carried what I learned during that time throughout my entire career, which sets me apart from many others who are in the field.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our city is huge and very diverse, which is an excellent opportunity for anyone trying to give people knowledge to help them in their own life journey.
