Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Gordon.
Rebekah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Whew, my story?! Well, I am a dark chocolate girl with Guyanese and Jamaican blood in my veins. And according to DNA tests, Ghana, Senegal, Cameroon and Nigeria (with a sprinkle of Spain and Asia South) are credited for my melanin and features. And with all of that richness in me, I frequently had to experience being “the only one” in classrooms, specialized programs, fellowships, and office spaces. I didn’t have to work hard to stand out because my complexion did that job for me. But I did have to work really hard to dispel myths and stereotypes about my race, and more so, I had to work really hard to truly get ahead in whatever field or industry I stepped foot in.
As the oldest of three and the child of an immigrant, I didn’t have many examples in my immediate family for my career or business decisions. But I did inherit the grind and relentlessness for excellence. I had the pressures of performing and also being “the first example”. With that, I made many mistakes, cried in secret and persevered many external and internal frustrations I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. However, over the years, God has graced my life with mentors and colleagues who showed me the ropes and recommended me for opportunities I never would’ve known about.
So my story is truly a culmination of people’s contributions to my success. Whether they were lessons learned or lessons completed, the tapestry of my life is colorful and textured because of their investment. I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors and my arms are held up high by secure people who see the future with me. Every business and degree I have is the fruit of faith and divine connections.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
HECK NO! *laughs* My journey has had its highs and its lows. There was a time when my family and I were technically homeless. Gratefully we had family members to bounce around with, and we were never on the street, but for a time we didn’t have a place of our own. And when my father passed away, I really took a hit in many areas and I had to dig myself out of some deep financial and emotional holes. Thank God He provided for us. We have a home, I was recommended for a full-time job and from that day I determined to never be defeated! I worked my butt off and created value wherever I could. I strategized, learned and grew. I started my business. I enrolled in law school. And I became my first client.
So now, I face challenges with a well-beat face baby. *laughs* I have the gift of faith. And what is fear? I don’t know what that is. Sorry to that spirit!
CopywrittIN – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
To put it simply, I am a creative problem solver. I work with clients from ideation to execution. For instance, if a client wants to have a live recording, my services can cover the design and branding of the event (flyers, social media assets, video editing, copy and advertisement strategy), hiring vendors (contracts, negotiation, and payment schedules), production elements (light design, set design, green rooms, hospitality) to distribution (record label negotiations and contracting deals). I am a full-service company.
I believe that dynamic is what sets me apart from many companies in my industry. I understand the language of a creative because I am one. I understand the language of an investor and business person because I am one. I understand the legal side of both the creative and business worlds because I’ve studied, experienced and will practice in it. Where I see this combination of skill sets valued most with my current client roster is in the area of trademarks. I not only design the logo/trademark, but I do a fine-tooth comb search through the USPTO database to make sure the design I created has a higher chance of being registered. This saves my client time and energy of going through all the motions of a design and it getting declined at the review phase. Having knowledge and experience in all of those industries makes me a better asset to my client.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me in most respects is if my client became secure in something they were insecure about before they engaged with me. Did they learn something new? Did they walk away more confident in their next steps? Are they applying the advice and seeing results? Their advancement is my success.
Success is also seeing a clear distance between where I was last month to where I am currently. If I’m not growing, I’m dying– and trust me, I have experienced some stagnation and disintegration over my time in business. Success is growth. Success is a new and beneficial way of thinking. Success is a forward movement towards wholeness.
