Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayci Johnson.
Kayci, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am 20 years old and I own an online fashion boutique called Klassy Kaay’s Collection. I first discovered my passion for entrepreneurship while in high school. I started my first online business as a graphic designer at 17. I quickly learned that owning your own business while going to school was a lot. So, I took sometime off, but my entrepreneurial urge continued to grow stronger. Therefore, in 2018, when I was 19 years old, I launched a cosmetic company where I sold several popular brands of makeup at a discounted price. The business was going well until people started to question the chemical components and the authenticity of the products which were questions in which I did not have the answers. Therefore, I decided to put that business on hold until I could do the research and prepare a business plan to launch a cosmetic line with my own products in which I could speak to. Meanwhile in 2019, I launched Klassy Kaay’s Collection to sell handbags and accessories and I have been having a blast growing my brand.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road. When I first started out, I was trying to do this on my own. My mother would give me proceeds to help out in which I appreciated but I needed her mental support as this new journey in which I had embarked was unknown territory. You see my mother did not know a lot about business, she had been raised to go to school, learn a skill, then go to work. She thought it was a good idea for me to want to start my own business, but she did not understand the in and outs of running a business. So, one day I invited her to a women empowerment event and she instantly came onboard.
Now, I had the financial and mental support I needed, but it has still been a long journey. After my first business failed, I was devastated. However, all hope was not lost because I was able to take what I had learned from my failure and use that information to open a second business. Even with Klassy Kaays, I struggle with marketing and targeting the right audience to produce sells. It has been tough, but with each day, I am finding new ways to try and make this business work. The end goal for me is to learn as much as I can to turn my business into a success!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have always been fashionable! When I was about three years old, my mother said she learned that a had a great sense of fashion. My mom explained that I knew how to match certain patterns and come up with a stylish outfit with little effort. I would even dictate what hairstyles were best suited for the outfits that I had chosen. In middle school, I was voted best dressed for two years straight. For me this confirmed that not only did I like what I was wearing, but others did as well. It was at that point that I realized that I wanted a career that dealt with fashion. I always told my mother my dream job was to be a fashion designer and travel the world. In high school, I took three years of fashion design and it really gave me the true knowledge of fashion industry. I became the historian of my school’s FIDM Fashion Club. I also helped coordinate and style my high school prom fashion show. So, it is not a coincidence at all that I am selling handbags and accessories. It’s the tip of the iceberg of all of the things that lie ahead for me and my brand.
