Meet Steven Anton Rehage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Anton Rehage.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up in South Florida, I was inspired by the ocean. I would spend hours walking the beach in search of hidden treasure… intrigued by the textures and colors of the shells revealed by each wave.

I also collected anything metal- but especially coins as a kid- I was fascinated by the patina the different metals would aquire over time.

While at FSU, I studied Art History during a semester abroad studying in Florence, Italy. Seeing the metal artifacts in museums inspired me to pursue silversmithing classes upon my return to the States.

I began making artistic, one of a kind pieces of wearable art. After graduating from FSU, I moved to NYC and continued my education at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Within a few weeks of being in NYC, I began designing jewelry for well known Seventh Avenue designers and International Design Houses. My jewelry was featured on the runways of New York Fashion Week and Cosmopolitan magazine.

I began selling my pieces at Bergdorf Goodman, Nordstrom as well as specialty boutiques and fine jewelry stores. I even appeared on Live TV sales channels including QVC. Eventually, I would open a namesake boutique in Coconut Grove.

As the company grew, the demand for salable and lower priced merchandise increased- as did the price of silver. The pieces began to loose their authenticity and handmade feel that made them unique. As the economy slowed down, I decided to go back to making limited edition and one of a kind pieces- a return to my roots.

With so many years of working on fashion shows, I also began working as a fashion and prop stylist on photoshoots here in Miami.

My background in Fine Art came in very handy as I began creating faux finishes and textured backgrounds for photoshoots which lead to an entire new career as a painter… and there is A LOT more…

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is a series of obstacles and the key is accepting the challenge- and finding a way to go forward.

When the price of silver skyrocketed to $47.00 an ounce and large silver pieces became almost impossible to sell- I started working on photoshoots and painting- while re-designing new jewelry pieces that were smaller, still unique and salable.

Please tell us about Steven Anton Rehage Jewelry.
I am a Jack of All Trades- I do everything from design jewelry, paint, design sets, work as a fashion and prop stylist on still and video shoots. I also have worked as a customer on commercials, in TV and Film, including Hunger Games, Ballers and Bloodline.

I have a unique vision- yet I am a people person. I think I am proudest of my ability to adapt quickly to different situations, deliver what the client is asking for without jeopardizing my integrity as a designer and artist.
It’s a delicate balance- that I have found a way to maintain.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My fondest memory as a child is running along the beach- pretending to be a pirate, looking for lost treasure- collecting shells, feathers, sea-glass and driftwood: just being in awe of the power and beauty of nature. The colors and textures, the sunlight glistening on the water and the sound of the waves as they crash on the shore.
