Today we’d like to introduce you to Tabitha Tindale.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tabitha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In the early 90’s my grandmother called me and said she had a necklace she wanted me to make for her. I hadn’t made any jewelry before but there was something about this necklace that she thought I could replicate. She took me to a bead store and we bought some supplies. The necklace was called a “Y” necklace and within days of making my first one orders for more started pouring in. I was living in New York City at the time and began doing craft fairs all around the city and Long Island.
During this time my husband was putting together some song demos for an album and had asked me to sing on them. When the demos were finished we immediately got a record deal which took us to London, England my jewelry business was put on hold for the next 15 years while we toured and recorded albums. In 2010 we moved to Delray Beach and in 2012 had our son. After five years of pretty much just staring at our little boy’s face, I started to miss working with my hands. A friend of mine who does women’s retreats to Bali had just returned from home with some Mala necklaces. She showed these beautiful hand-knotted, beaded necklaces to me and right away I was inspired to make one. I bought some stones and thread and Pink Moon Mala was born.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Making the jewelry has always come pretty easily to me. I love putting colors together and finding new materials to incorporate into my designs. The hard part is the promotion and advertising. I use a great shopping website platform called Shopify. It took a while to get the website up as you have to learn how to do it. Once you get over the programming hump then you have to load all of your products which is very time-consuming. Promoting on Social media is really the main way to get customers to your website so you have to be constantly posting. This is a bit of a struggle for me as I am very involved in my son’s life and not very I interested in self-promotion.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Pink Moon Mala story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m very picky with the stones I use. I think anyone can bead a bracelet but putting color combinations together is a taste thing. A good aesthetic is paramount and crucial to any business involving design and something you’re born with. It is very important to me to have a nice and clean yet earthy feel to my jewelry and marketing materials.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think luck comes from within. If you’re a nice person and make good decisions you’ll have good luck. I consider myself a very lucky person in this respect. I love my customers and will spend a lot of time with them while they’re choosing their piece. I want everyone to be happy wearing my jewelry. I custom fit almost every piece I make. If you see me at a show I’ll pretty much be working on jewelry the whole time as I’m constantly adjusting lengths on necklaces for people.
