Meet Raymond Sherman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raymond Sherman.

So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in a small town in Southern NJ where my Dad, who worked for the government doing photography, started a side business doing wedding photography on the weekends. At the time, there were very few Wedding Photographers so he became very popular and needed help with the overload. He literally gave me this huge camera when I was around 13 yrs. old and with very little instructions, sent me out to shoot weddings!

It was terrifying at first but after a few mishaps, I became very good at shooting weddings. I later decided I wanted to branch out and went to NYC to attend photography school for commercials, fashion, product, etc. I loved the school (Germain School of Photography, which no longer exists), the teachers were fantastic and I enjoyed being in the City. When I graduated from school, I worked in several big studios where I shot catalog photography for Macy’s, Nordstroms, department stores, different products and even kids with toys for the boxes for Matel ad Kener Toy Co.

It was an exciting time, I was it the Photo District, which is right next to Times Square and Central Park and there were great places to do location shooting and interesting places to explore when not working.

Later, when my Dad passed away, I took over the wedding business with my wife and did that with much success for many years.

We later moved to Wellington and I opened a studio in West Palm Beach. We stayed there until my two boys graduated from high school.

I found a job shooting product for a big promotional product company in Miami and moved here in 2009. The company was sold after I worked there for five years and I then worked for a company shooting women’s shoes and then for company shooting historic replica mirrors some of which are in the white house and the biggest Mansions in the world.

I have been freelance for the last two years and have enjoyed shooting everything from fine cuisine at some of the top restaurant’s jewelry, fashion lifestyle, products and more!

I love Miami, and I live and work in Miami Beach.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been challenging as digital came in, I needed to change with the times and reinvent myself several times!

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I love what I do! I live on the beach and do shoots there as much as possible. Having years of experience and shooting so many different types of photography, there isn’t much that I haven’t shot. I am most proud of the skills and ability to get the shot no matter what!

What were you like growing up?
I was shy as a kid but became a clown when I reached my teenage years. I still act like a teenager now.
