Today we’d like to introduce you to Kassandra Alfonso.
Kassandra, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
February of 2018 I weighed myself and saw that I was weighing 360 pounds. At that point, I realized that if I didn’t start to take control of my health I wasn’t going to be around long enough to see my grandchildren. Around that time I was introduced to my coach, Pearson Sutton, and after debating if I would start to train or not I decided to push past my fear and start training. In the first class I almost didn’t show up, I was terrified and lacking confidence in my ability to do this. But I went anyway and even though I struggled I continued coming back every week until I was training five days a week.
What’s helped me be where I am today is that’s almost eight years ago my grandma died at 65 years from congestive heart failure & respiratory issues which stemmed from her issues with obesity. She’s one of the reasons I work so hard now and pushed myself to make this lifestyle change. When she got sick we had several conversations where she would tell me to take care of my health and not put myself in the same place she was in.
But after she passed I went into a deep depression where I gained more weight. Then I had my daughter and continued to gain weight from there. I didn’t listen to anything she had told me until I experienced my issues. Until I had to face the reality of what my life would be if I choose to stay obese over adopting a healthier lifestyle. I had two choices; the easy one which was staying obese or the hard one, which Involved changing so much of myself. I went with the hard one for several reasons but a huge one is, I don’t want to die at 65. And god willing, I will live much longer than that. Losing weight is hard but being obese is harder, not only on the body but on the soul.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Weight loss is not a smooth road in any way. It’s hard, it’s full of ups and downs, and when you hit plateaus it can be discouraging. But it’s supposed to be hard, hard is what makes it great. When it gets hard you have to find ways to keep pushing yourself and continue working towards your goals. I’m not always motivated but I’m always committed to myself and my goals.
Tell us more about your work.
I don’t have a business yet but I’m working on starting one that relates to my weight loss journey. For now, I have my Instagram @Kassgetsfit_ where I post my workouts, my progress, and do my best to help inspire and motivate others.
I’m most proud of how my page has helped inspire and motivate others. I get so many messages from strangers telling me how I helped them get started or gave them the push they needed to keep going and that makes me feel great.
I feel what sets me apart from others is how I don’t let my weight dictate my training or my life. I’ve embraced my body at every step of my journey and I’m so thankful for how it’s rewarded me during this journey. My training is also something that sets me apart, despite my weight my coach pushes me to do things I wouldn’t dream of doing because my weight and the feeling of accomplishing hard exercises and showing others you can not only train like an athlete but be an athlete, at any weight is so satisfying.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe luck has played a role in my journey of life. It’s all been a result of my decision to work hard and go after my goals.
