Meet Matthieu Bettant of Bettant bakery and Cafe in South Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthieu Bettant.

Matthieu, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in a family of bakers, I am a fourth-generation baker, indeed my great grandfather opened the bakery in France in 1935. My parents still own that same bakery. I studied Hotel and Restaurant Management at Institut Paul Bocuse in Lyon, Throughout my travels and different jobs, I realized the importance that bread holds in life. I then decided to pursue my studies in the bakery field. After a few years of studies and work experiences (France, Switzerland, Peru) I obtained the Brevet the Maitrise in bread bakery (masters degree in the bakery). I always envision working with my family and wanted to open my own business with my wife. She grew up partly in Miami, after a few trips we noticed the potential of the city. We recently took over a bakery in South Beach and are slowly making it our own.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
New city, new challenges. Adapting to a new culture, new country, new environment with our family took some time. Being a French traditional baker I had to adapt to the ingredients, staff, weather.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a small family-owned business, a mom and pop style bakery. we specialize in fresh baked goods. our croissant, sandwich bread is popular. We hope to get known for other products that we have bought for the bakery. Since we recently took over it takes time. It is still a little early for us to develop more on the matter.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We plan to make this bakery our own and get settled in. Develop the retail and café offer, we are currently working on the menu. We are also trying to develop more wholesale accounts.
