Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina DaSilva.
Kristina, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
In 2007, I was looking for a new direction in my life and career. As someone who had always enjoyed volunteering and activism, I became interested in learning more about how I could blend my passions with my work to create for myself a greater sense of purpose. As timing would have it, a position opened at a local nonprofit that I admired and now, over a decade later, I can say with much gratitude that I’m glad I took that turn. October will mark my 12th year with HandsOn Broward and I couldn’t be prouder of our team and our work.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
At HandsOn Broward, we empower people to make a meaningful difference for the causes they care about. What sets us apart from many nonprofits in that we don’t focus on a single social issue. We have daily opportunities for people to do something positive, whether it’s planting a sea oat to help strengthen our dunes system, painting a community mural or teaching a child to read.
Through our partnerships with hundreds of local nonprofits and businesses, we have created opportunities for people to revitalize schools, parks, playgrounds and neighborhoods. Our volunteers create art in public spaces, build sustainable gardens, renovate community properties, respond to disasters and work to protect the environment. We often say that we stand on the front lines of kindness. And I think that’s what I am most proud of – our commitment to using kindness as our compass and holding compassion as a core value always.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
HandsOn Broward has been spreading kindness for 45 years, so I’d say that our city has lots of love to give. That said, our door is always open for anyone who feels like sharing some time to make a difference. We’d love to invite all Voyage MIA readers to join us!
