Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Moore.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started out as an advertising agency account executive and was laid off a week after my honeymoon and right before the holidays (we lost a big client). I was worried about holiday gifts so I made some (jewelry) and gave them out to my friends and family. Luckily, the client that the agency lost called me and hired me directly the next week. Long story short, everyone loved the jewelry and started placing orders. I founded the business working nights and weekends while working for a nonprofit. When I became pregnant with my daughter, I decided to go out on my own to give me the flexibility to work for myself and take care of the children, I’ve now been in business full time for over 15 years.
Please tell us about your art.
I make handmade jewelry in semi-precious stones, sterling silver and freshwater pearls. I also have a line of wire-wrapped home accents. My designs have a coastal them and influence. The inspiration is the bay and the ocean, starfish, anchors, pearls, aqua blue water and sand! We spend the winters in Marathon Key and exhibit at several shows there in the winter… summer months are spent in Annapolis and on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
What do you think about the conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
That is a hard question and one I get asked often. I think offering art venues through the city that don’t charge a fortune to set up, such as a regular art market, pop up shops and co-ops. Featuring holiday gift guides and where to find local art in the media is extremely helpful as artists don’t have a lot of money for advertising expenditures.
