Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Saumat.
Jasmine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I originally went to Florida School of the Arts on a scholarship to study and earn my degree in Theatre Design and Technology (Costume Design). I was there for nearly a year before I realized that I no longer had a passion for designing. I found myself only really attending my stage makeup class. I’ve always had a love for makeup but my passion for it grew rapidly during this time. I had then decided to pack my bags and come back home to Miami to pursue a role in the makeup industry. With my parent’s love and support, I started JMUA Miami. I am now a freelance makeup artist across south Florida.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve definitely had my fair share of ups and downs throughout my ongoing journey to success. A big one, in the beginning, was not having enough money to build a kit suitable to take on clients. Another big one was staying motivated and creating enough weekly content to stay relevant. This industry is always evolving, and with new trends coming out of every direction, it’s imperative to stay in the know and to challenge yourself out of your comfort zone every day.
The first thing I would say to women who have just found their passion and want to start their journey would be “Keep going! What are you waiting for !?” I find that nowadays people tend to “give up” or end up putting a pause on their passion and goals because they are intimidated by the amount of time and work that you need to give in order to see any sort of growth. My advice would be to just keep going and take things slow. The daily goal is to accomplish at least one task that will get you closer to success. One task a day is all it takes. It doesn’t matter when you got there, but HOW you got there.
Challenge yourself every day and enjoy the journey.
We’d love to hear more about JMUA Miami.
I’m a Makeup Artist and I’m mainly known for editorial style. Editorial makeup is such a unique form of makeup because it’s not always about looking “pretty”. It is art. it creatively tells a story and is open to all forms of interpretation. I also specialize in SFX makeup, everyday glam, & makeup suitable for photo shoots, weddings, and corporate events.
As a service provider, I’m most proud of how quickly my technique has evolved over such a short period of time. I feel like that along with my want to create long term bonds with my clients are really what set me apart from other makeup artists in my area.
As a brand, I’m most proud of how I’ve been able to work alongside so many other creators on various projects. for example, I recently just finished working with visual 1, a production company based out of Colombia. They recruited me to be there on set makeup artist for 3 separate music videos.
Being given these opportunities has been life-changing and has truly shown me that hard work true does pay off.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
I could sit here and name you dozens of different celebrities and makeup artists that have inspired. But no woman inspires me more than my mother. For as long as I could remember, my mom has always told me to do what I love because I love it, not because it will give me money. Money should always be considered a bonus but the love for what you do should always be your drive. My mom has gone through things I can’t even imagine living through. she’s sacrificed everything for me, just so I could taste the sweeter side of life. It’s not always unicorns and rainbows with her, but she always made sure I had what I needed. I not only owe my success to myself, but to her. Because without her, I wouldn’t be where I’m at today.
