Today we’d like to introduce you to Zyana Trillz.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It wasn’t until the age of seven when I first sang to my sister that my family really discovered my talent to sing. I found my passion, and that spark turned into a fire that would only grow and turn into fuel to feed my dreams. I began doing school talent shows, I joined chorus, dance, and drama and started taking my craft seriously. By the age of 10, I was casted for lead roles in school plays, singing National Anthems and Solos at school functions and won several state competitions by the age of 14.
In high school, I attended Robert Morgan where I took chorus as my main strand. Thanks to Mr. McCall, this is where I learned to sharpen my tools and further develop my singing skills. My passion for singing only grew stronger and stronger. I started writing songs with my classmates, recording in our high school studio and I was always involved in the arts. It wasn’t until two years after high school where I decided I wasn’t going to sit on my talent anymore. I was going to face the world and do anything in my power to pursue my dreams and create a name for myself. I started meeting people, going to studios, doing covers online and I met D.Shim, a local producer/engineer who helped me bring my vision to life. A few months later, I was featured on Revolt TV, did features with well-known artists such as Slip N Slides Mike Smiff and Cash Money Record’s HotBoyTurk. That opened doors to being in the studio with Timbaland, Sy Ari The Kid, Tink, and helping with the creative process behind the scenes which brought a light on to my music. I went viral singing on a lot of celebrity pages including Lil Duval, MCLyte, Iceberg, and DJ Khaled that helped me grow a very supportive loving fanbase.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t believe any road to any career is a smooth road. You will fail, but it is through failure that you find success. You have to learn your weaknesses in order to turn them into strengths.
One of my biggest struggles along the way is having to filter through the BS. There are levels to the music industry and you have to work your way up. Along the way, there are people who say they do music, and then people who actually DO music. Having to see what is real and what is fake has been a struggle but I am thankful because learning from my experiences, now the fake always sticks out like a sore thumb.
Another struggle is working in such a male dominant industry. I’ve been disrespected and sold dreams, but that only makes my fight stronger.
Advice I would give to women starting on their journey: DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING THEY TELL YOU, there are so many scams in the industry and remember YOU ARE WHAT ADDS VALUE! You’re the artist with the talent, stay grounded, stay hungry, stay passionate and keep going.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a Singer, Songwriter, and Performer. As a brand, I am proud of my movement as a whole, being an independent artist with no management, no team, no budget, and yet still manage to build a fanbase, get booked for shows, get paid features, make music, shoot videos, and collaborate with an amazing artist.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
Pride. I feel like a lot of women in the music industry have a lot of pride. It takes a lot of work to get recognition and respect as a woman in the industry that I do understand. However, there is way too much “I’m above you, you’re not on my level” energy being exuded and not enough “let’s work together, win together and make something great” type of energy. These energies need to be shifted in order for us to prevail and be able to lead. It’s not about what one can get over on you, it’s about what we can do together as a whole that will make the difference.
