Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Gutierrez.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I get my creativity and love of photography from my mom. As a young girl, my mom would create mock photoshoots of my family, friends and me at parks, my backyard, Vizcaya, and the Entrance of Coral Gables. Back then, I was totally annoyed when she would direct me to put my chin down, look to the side with my eyes or to look more relaxed, but now that I am behind the camera, I appreciate those photo shoots and direction.
I have always been the friend to take photos in our group, edit them and share via Photobucket. I began to take photos professionally when my husband became a video director and he inspired me to utilize my craft.
I’ve been shooting for a few years on and off, but since last year, I have put in more effort and passion to making photography my full-time career. Today, I am not where I want to be, but I am heading in the right direction, thrilled to accomplish goals and see what my future holds.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would say one of the hardest struggles is comparing my work to other photographers. In a world of social media, likes and follows, it’s hard not to obsess (in a good way) over my peers’ portfolios. I have to stop and remind myself that they have been in the industry longer, have more experience and clientele. We all have something to offer.
My advice to other women is to pursue their dreams, no matter how big or small. Life will always get in the way but push through and make it happen.
Please tell us about Sophi Sessions.
At the moment, I photograph expecting mothers, families, lifestyle, and quinces. I am big on customizing the session to each client and not pushing them to do something that makes them feel cheesy or uncomfortable. I want them to leave the session feeling like I gave them an experience as opposed to a service.
I am currently working on a photography project dedicated to my late sister, Shayla, who passed away in February after a 9-year cancer battle. I want to document the families of cancer patients in their natural state, whether it’s in the patient’s hospital room, in their homes watching a movie, lying in bed or just talking to each other. Those are memories that will live on forever and I would love nothing more than to freeze that moment in time for families going through the vicious world of cancer. That will be my proudest moment as a photographer.
What sets me apart from others is that I am relatable and always thinking ahead. I have been through a fair share of hardships which helps me connect with others and see different perspectives.
