Meet Nancy Metayer in Coral Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Metayer.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nancy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a first-generation Haitian-American born in Broward County. Coral Springs has been my home for over 21 years. I have been shaped by the vibrancy of the community and the cultural hallmarks that make residing here unique. As far back as I can remember, I have been fascinated by nature. I excelled in science in primary school and knew I wanted a career in the industry. There was a time when I wasn’t sure if majoring in science would be ideal considering I did not meet or see scientist or environmentalist that looked like me. Through the support of family and friends, I was encouraged to further immerse myself into science. After I graduated from high school, I matriculated to Florida A&M University where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Sciences. While in undergrad, I interned with the Florida House of Representatives and Senator Bill Nelson.

Upon graduation, I moved to Washington DC where I interned at The White House. As I transitioned out of my role at The White House, I decided to pursue more education and went on to receive a Master of Health Science degree in Environmental Health Sciences from Johns Hopkins University, Bloomberg School of Public Health. These opportunities nurtured my interest in politics. My first introduction into politics was through my many conversations with Marie Theresa Maxime, my grandmother. Since I was able to vote, we had discussions about who and why we are voting for a candidate. She was very pivotal in helping me discover my political interest. As time has progressed, my experiences have allowed me to bridge my passion is science, politics, and activism. Today, I operate disaster resilience efforts and climate change advocacy educating marginalized communities on how climate change directly impacts them. Early this year, I ran to be the next Mayor of Coral Springs. Though I did not win the election, it is a choice I am proud of. The opportunity has given me greater vision and purpose for what I am striving to do next.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve learned so many valuable lessons within the last few years. I have spent many years determining who I want to be, the work I want to do, and the impact I want to have in my community and the world. As I navigate the world, I have encountered many people who made assumptions about my value and abilities. While hurtful, those comments have made me more resilient. I know their accusations were projections and limitations they have set on themselves. As a black woman, environmentalist, and political influencer, and in my early 30’s, I have been challenged on my work history, material status, and have even experienced racial discriminations in certain environments. Through all of this, I realize my purpose is greater than negative commentary. I have an obligation to be in spaces where people who look like me typically are void. I believe in diversity and I think it’s important that younger generations see what is possible. I want black girls to believe they can excel in science, care about the environment, and run for political office if they so choose. I want this to become normalized so when we are in our respective areas, it’s not a taboo.

Please tell us about your work.
I am an environmentalist, activist, political advisor, and future politician. Currently, I am the Climate Justice Program Manager for The New Florida Majority and former Broward County Soil & Water Conservation District, Supervisor. I volunteer my time on various boards and committees in my community such as Ruth’s List-Broward County, Women’s March-Broward, Avanse Ansanm, Broward County Commission on the Status of Women, Coral Springs Neighborhood and Environmental Committee.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
I am proud of my efforts to run for Mayor of Coral Springs. Even with the odds stacked against us, we [my team and I] prevailed. I came in 2nd in a race, I only had 60 days to prepare for. Although I did not win, we ran a successful race, one that I am proud of.
