Today we’d like to introduce you to Gus Gutierrez.
Gus, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started working from a truck at the age of 20 years old designing gardens, installing, maintaining gardens. In 1990 I decided I was opening in South Beach after committing to the renaissance of Miami Beach (South Beach). We grew to over sixty employees within 5 years.
We were selected by the celebrities, CEOs, the Socialites, and all the shakers and movers to design, install, and maintain their exterior areas including the gardens. (I was selected to do the morning news for channel 4 with Gardening segments which proved exciting but my talents for movie star qualities were not as sharp as in design). After a short period of time, started being asked and solicited to assist in the interior design and decoration for clients, which was the core of the business for decades. Our in-house architects assisted the execution of my designs to execute all the dreams and desires of the clients which soon became life time friends still today over twenty years later. Real estate was another aspect which was and has been an instrumental asset for my clients and friends to receive full assistance since the relationships that were built were so significant. I was blessed with having Good Orderly Direction (GOD) in my life and the ability to practice gratitude to keep me growing, inspired, and creating our experiences and our clients and friends.
Today, I live in Historic Ft. Pierce, Fl. Here, I retreat to get inspiration and continue to create in the beautiful Historic forgotten small town. Old Florida at its best. The other residences and offices include always Miami Beach, New York City, Orebro in Sweden, Zurich Switzerland where I live and work for the past fifteen years in-between. This keeps every day, every project fresh with inspiration. The Alton Road Nurseries provides a full-service retail garden center along with the private client department which is where I have focused my personal commitment of time. To dedicate myself and focus 100% when I commit to the client at this level. This has allowed all levels of service to be available. Someone from the street can walk in or a busy high-profile individual which is accustom to a high level of service and delivery can count on being scheduled and accommodated. Our white glove service mentality is what I like to call what we offer.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Life brings life. Dot com bubble, September 9/11, 2008 Real estate crash, death of my father, all have brought different struggles and opportunity to grow and develop as a greater human being. My biggest struggles have always been followed by great achievements or accomplishments. They bring me back to center to focus.
The Alton Road Nurseries and House and Designs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are not just a garden store. We are able to deliver dreams and provide the feeling individuals imagined. Seeing something pretty and feeling a romantic, peaceful, happy, elegant feeling are very different. I have mastered the ability to deliver the feeling the client was imagining. The emotional sensibility of design is the master piece. I pride myself in being able to deliver this.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Yes. I cannot begin to list all the people as I was blessed with amazing clients and for their own respect will not name drop. They formed my self-esteem, my confidence in believing and working together with me to create their dreams. Without their dreams I would have no canvas to create on. My parents Both my Mother and Father were amazing parents. Always providing guidance, support, love, and all-around parenting beyond words. Abundance of love. My employees and vendors all played together as assets in the success as they participated in the execution and delivery. One person cannot single handedly build an organization. My personal assistant and confidant for over 25 years has been with me through most of my adult life. Gregory Pope has become family to me and in my heart. He has been an employee and a friend for over 25 years. He has successfully been involved and assisted all the stages of our evolution through all the different cities, and stages of our history.
