Today we’d like to introduce you to Scoe Williams.
Scoe, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in Overtown and Lil’ Haiti. Raised in a household with one younger sibling. I got into photography after I got a point & shoot camera from Eckerd in a Christmas toy giveaway. and it’s been a love for it ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride. My father was sentenced to six life sentences on conspiracy charges when I was around two years old. Growing up in a single parent had many disadvantages. I moved around a lot. It’s a gift and a curse because it taught to be independent early. I started trying to get my own money any way I could. In April 2012 my mom committed suicide. That’s something I still struggle with every day.
Built Different – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’m a photographer. I really like street photography because it’s no structure or rules but you have to pay attention or see the picture before you take it. I don’t really specialize in any certain style of photography but I have been experimenting with portraiture. What I’m most proud of is that I when take pictures for someone is that I’m giving them a time machine. They may not appreciate it now but years from now they’ll look at those photos and go back to that moment. What sets me apart from others is all the misfortune I experienced in my early life gave me a perspective on life that most people can’t fathom. So, my style is different. I think different. I’m built differently. Shoutout to my homies.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. People do things some good some bad. God balances it out.
