Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Hess.
Jamie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Currently, I am doing Restaurant and Bar Consulting as I search for locations to open my next Bar/Restaurant in South Florida. As well I am developing a start-up “delivery-only” service that specializes in healthy food. Can’t all be Bourbon and Tacos in my world! I like fitness, wellness, and a great cocktail too!
I am originally from Washington, DC but have spent a good chunk of my time as a child and adult in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale areas. A year ago, I sold my Restaurant in DC to move down here permanently.
Even though I started in Tech and Transportation (family business) I’ve always been drawn to the Hospitality Business and am excited to do more things in it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The path of least resistance would definitely have not been to pursue the Bar/Restaurant Business. It’s long hours, a lot of capital, a bunch of headaches and you have to put out fires on a daily basis. That being said, it’s one of the most rewarding business’s you can be. You get to create amazing experiences for people on a daily basis. That’s the part that makes all the hard work worth it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Gator Tacos, LLC story. Tell us more about the business.
What sets me apart from others in this industry is that I first look at it as a business and not a lifestyle. At the end of the day, it has to pay the bills to be worth it. I am a creative type but business first. What also makes my customers and friends love me and keep coming back to my places is the authenticity of them. I don’t try and open a “themed” places that don’t have a bearing on me personally. I like art, motorcycles, the beach, yoga, soccer, and all of my places touch a bit on these things and my customers know and appreciate it.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It wouldn’t be my career but for some of the charity work, I do for Animal Shelters I was invited to meet the Dalai Lama. What an amazing experience!
