Meet Cindy Hing of South Florida PBS in North Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Hing.

Cindy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey began in Georgetown, Guyana. I was born in a village called Bagotstown and came to Miami when I was five months old. After that, my family continued to move back and forth between Guyana and Miami before making Miramar our permanent home and that’s where I grew up.

I attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale for Broadcast Journalism and Florida International University for Communications. I interned at about ten different radio, newspaper and TV stations around South Florida and was known at AI as the “Internship Queen.” My last internship was at South Florida PBS, where I helped out on Check, Please! South Florida and Art Loft. About a year later, I was offered a job as an Associate Producer on Issues Report then other shows followed. Now, I’m the producer of On the Town in The Palm Beaches with host Frank Licari and I literally get to work on Sesame Street.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I produce a South Florida PBS show called On the Town in The Palm Beaches hosted by Frank Licari. It is a fast-paced travel show based on fun/unique things to do around Palm Beach County. We have featured about a dozen cities and visited over 200 locations around town.

The best part about my job is visiting the city or town being featured and meeting all of the unique people who live, work and play there. I have made lifelong friends with some amazing people who have been following the show since their episode aired.

I also enjoy working with my talented PBS crew. And our host, Frank Licari keeps us entertained while on location, which is much appreciated when you have a jam-packed schedule visiting about 18 to 20 locations in 2.5 days.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Finding a job was not as easy as I thought it would be. I knocked on a lot of doors and sent out hundreds of resumes until someone decided to give me a chance. I’m forever grateful and I’ll never forget that person who helped open that door for me.
