Today we’d like to introduce you to Aalana.
Aalana, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
The first form of art that I fell in love with when I was seven years old is poetry. Having the gift of being a little girl with brown skin, growing up in Duval, often caused my voice and ideas to be silenced on many occasions, so writing to myself was my main escape for self-expression. I grew up listening to Tupac & Nas, so my passion for uplifting messages through Hip-Hip was already growing. I didn’t start opening up until middle school, though— when I first started reading my poems to my older brother. He told me he had no idea how wise I was and that I could be a rapper one day, but we laughed it off.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Vibrations. My art is composed of vibrations. Some may feel it, and others won’t, but you can’t deny that it happened. Music is such a liberating way to tell my truth & how I felt during a situation. The beautiful thing about it, there are people who share the same truths & the feeling of relating with another human being is a blessing, especially through MUSIC. That’s why I’m so grateful for my brother & my best friend because they bring me closer to knowing the meaning of truth, and I want to share it with whoever is willing to listen.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
Definitely the artist themself. You have to love yourself enough to not speak against your own success. You have to believe in yourself enough to keep going after an L. Not a loss, but a lesson. Also, genuine support. You can have all the money & all the resources in the world, but as an artist, YOUR art will not live to be appreciated if there’s no genuine love for it, or you.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My first project, “A Test Subject,” is out now only on Soundcloud and there’s a music video for my song “Fakie,” directed by Desmond Cook (@dezdirectz) on Youtube. Also, I have another project and music video dropping soon, so I’m excited to share those with the world & of course, the lovely people who support me.
