Today we’d like to introduce you to Karina Mariie Smith.
Karina Mariie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Boca Raton, Fl. Although I do not come from wealthy family background, by living in this area, it has taught me to reach for the stars and nothing less. I have always pushed myself in all I do. I started working at the age of 15, sometimes two jobs. I was a cheerleader for over five years, from the lowest level to the collegiate level. And ultimately, I will be the first in my family to not only obtain a bachelors but further my education by working towards an MSW. I plan to become an LCSW and help underprivileged communities. Aside from my studies, I enjoy building up my social media platform and networking.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No way, not a smooth road. I would say teenage years were the hardest. Being a mixed girl in a predominately white area at times felt uncomfortable. Also, my family fell into a financial crisis. Starting to help out my family by paying my own bills at 16 was a shocker. I have always been able to take a step back and look at the big picture. Finding myself has been a beautiful process (thank you to everyone who has been a part of my journey. Good and bad, you all were a contribution). Having responsibilities at a young age has only molded me to become such a headstrong woman. For women who are just starting their journey, I would tell them to channel their struggles into viewing them as a blessing. There will ALWAYS be light in the darkness… we have moonlight in the night time. Remember that. As long as you push for yourself, your light will flow into others.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
As of now, I work at a digital marketing agency. I start my master’s program this fall and plan on completely submerging myself into the social work field. I would love to become a mental health therapist for underprivileged communities. It is to my complete understanding that communities such as these, unfortunately, lack resources that are vital. I would love to see an uplifting difference and be a part of positive change. I feel that I am most known for my easygoing personality. I am an open ear to all. I always say that if I am able to genuinely contribute to someone’s happiness, then that is where my happiness lays. Aside from my personality, I would say I am known for my constant grind. Whether it be in the gym, photo shoots, having a good time with friends, sharing spiritual posts, I am grateful that I am often told that my grind is noticeable and inspires many.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Your life is a garden. Sometimes, you may have to pull weeds that you thought would turn into the most beautiful flower (this applies to friendships as well). In other words, life is about constantly revamping your circle. Be around people that bring out the best in you. People that look out for you just as you would them. As far as networking, try new things! The only way to move up is to be uncomfortable. Get out there! But also respect your space and know when it is time to have alone time. Balance. (:
