Meet Marilyn Johansen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marilyn Johansen.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started as a young child, and by age 10, I found myself in an adult class with oils and a live model. I am from an Air Force family, and we moved every 2-3 years. I lived from Brussels, Belgium to Kadena, Okinawa and all over the U.S. My father was a jet fighter pilot, reconnaissance pilot, test pilot, and instructor, so I grew up on the front row of history. I guess the wealth of exposure to so many countries and cultures kept my mind busy. Having to always be the new kid made art important to me. I could express myself through my art.

Please tell us about your art.
I paint everything and anything that interests me. I have a series of Soldiers representing family members and Friends that have served in the U.S. Military from WWI to today. This Series has been traveling throughout the South Florida Area since 2016 and is growing in a number of paintings. I have taken trips to visit family members with stories to add to this series. I also have a series of paintings of family members and friends that I feel had an impact on my life growing up. I like scenes, portraits, and birds. I love doing compositions and challenging myself to push the painting to make it better. I hope people are touched by my work. I hope they feel something or think about the paintings.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Art can be a personal thing, but I am competitive and compete locally, Nationally, and Internationally winning prizes at all levels. Since my favorite medium is Watercolor, I have Signature Status in several State and local societies. I have been featured in Northlight Books SPLASH 20-Creative Composition and in Watercolor Artist Magazine. I hope to sell more and more work.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have a website and an Art Facebook page. I also am the resident Artist for the Frame n’ Art Gallery in Lauderdale by the Sea.
