Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Serrano.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Stacy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Everything all started for me when I was a freshman in high school and my friend wanted me to do her makeup. At first, I was confused because I felt like I knew nothing about makeup but I did it anyway and at the end, she thought it was so well done that she told all her friends. Then, it became a business for me and I started studying makeup and having clients from all ages and races and I learn so much through time and I knew I was meant to be a makeup artist. As I’m doing makeup for a bride one morning, I thought to myself I don’t know if this what I want to do, I feel like I’m much greater than just an ordinary makeup artist for bridal and prom. Then, I watched a horror movie one day and I thought you know the makeup they do on there is amazing, I wondered how they do it and of course, I did intensive research and I can officially say that special effects were my calling, but I knew I wanted to work in film and have my name in the credits. Unfortunately, I was working a 9-5 job and wasn’t making that money I needed to be able to go to the school I wanted to attend in Los Angeles but I still tried to save up. Then, one day, a random stranger message me on Instagram and I thought well who is this girl, she told me about an amazing opportunity were I could be my own boss and work from home on social media and at first I was a little skeptical but then, I hit a breaking point and I needed to do whatever I can so I can attend that school. So, I told her SIGN ME UP! And I proudly can say I will never look back. That was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I was able to quit my 9-5 and get a job with a fashion company as a makeup artist and be part of this amazing hair care company named Monat. Ever since then, I been traveling the world, and been able to save up more money for my education and soon you’ll see me living in LA working as a special effects makeup artist and I have no doubts about that!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There was absolutely lots of obstacles in my way. The first that really helped get in the right path was getting rid of negative people and negative thoughts. Another was planning everything from start to finish and making up obstacles and writing down what I would do in the situation to keep going and not hold me back. I also started to go to coffee shops more often and just plan for the month and write at least five goals to achieve that month. I really believe writing things down will help the universe and yourself get in track and keep you loving the process even if it might take a while to get to the top.
Please tell us about your work.
I specialize in special effects makeup and beauty makeup. I can say I’m most proud of myself for staying true to myself and being patient with my process. I believe what makes me different from the most makeup artist is that im not just doing this for fun or to get more followers or become a star. I’m doing this because I am genuinely passionate about my career and I just want to create amazing art even if it left unnoticed, I just love the process of art and the way it makes me feel because when I see my finish work I fall in love with my career all over again. For sure, I want to get noticed by others and people in the industry but I always told myself that no matter what, KEEP CREATING! Whether someone is watching or not and I believe that’s what makes me different.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
I believe any women and all women can be amazing at anything that this world throws and that needs no explanation, PERIOD.
