Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Beth Albritton.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mary Beth. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As many in the non-profit world, this is a career that I fell into and then fell in love with! In the past 15 years, I have worked for individuals with developmental disabilities, with higher education, and, for the past four years, with United Way of Broward County. As the Director of Women’s Philanthropy, I have the privilege of leading Women United, a dynamic force of philanthropic women who not only invest their dollars into our organization but have stepped up and made this the leading women’s group in Broward County. Women United is recognized for their work in advocacy, volunteering, fundraising, and high-level networking. Our women are made up of various backgrounds, races, ages, giving levels and voices, but collectively are making real changes in Broward County and inspiring the next generation of women to step up and into giving back to their community. I am in awe every day by the selfless actions of these women. Their actions inspire me to continue the work that I do.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have been fortunate to have had amazing roles within the organizations I have worked for. These roles have afforded me many opportunities to participate in unique and exciting events, meet well-known individuals and grow both as a professional and individual in ways that I may not have otherwise had. However, like most women in my generation and before, I have had my share of struggles as it relates to fair pay and advancement. More and more, I see barriers for women being broken down, and women making their voices louder to be heard. I see these changes for myself and am very optimistic about the opportunities for future generations of women, which includes my own daughter.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the United Way of Broward County story. Tell us more about it.
United Way of Broward County fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in our community. These are the three pillars that we have deemed to be the most essential in order for an individual, family, and community to thrive. We use real data through our ALICE (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed) Report to determine what the biggest needs in our community are, and then we use dollars raised to fund the necessary programs to assist individuals with those needs. United Way of Broward County is a lifeline for those to receive a hand up, not a handout. What differentiates us from others is that we are a worldwide organization. United Way is invited and welcomed at the table to discuss real change through policy at a local, state and national level. This allows us to make a serious impact on issues resulting in changing the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals, all by using our voices. By making change through volunteering, funding programs, and advocacy, we are able to move the needle faster and more effectively.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure I can attribute anything to luck. I’ve worked hard to be educated, to build relationships and be the best person I can be. However, I feel very lucky to be a woman in this next phase of female equality. We are finding a space where women can feel empowered to have life balance. I’m a professional, an individual, a wife, a mom and a student (about to complete a Ph.D.!). Some days, I feel like I can conquer the world, and some days, I wonder why I got out of bed. All of these things combined have made me who I am, and I feel like the luckiest woman out there. And I know I’m not alone!
