Today we’d like to introduce you to Blockboy Polo.
Blockboy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I go by the Blockboy Polo, I’m from North Miami. The name Polo came from my older cousin who died of a home invasion gone wrong. I have been rapping since elementary, writing on sheets of paper, going against my classmates at the lunch table every day. What really encouraged me is seeing my mom cry a lot, I used to watch her cry as the bills piled up and seeing eviction notices at the door when we came back home from somewhere, her getting no help, my father walking out on us on the early ages of my life. Rapping helps me pour out the feelings and emotions I hold on to. When I have nobody to talk to, I run to the studio, speak truth and vent to my fans hoping to relate or use my story as motivation. I got here today off the strength of God. He blessed me with a talent and a voice that in God’s will, one day will get me a million dollars. It’s been a rough journey with more to go, fighting depression, temptation, and also pain, but I’m going to get through by the grace of God. My music has gained me fans all around the world from Germany to Africa and I still got lots of growing to do.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. People who said they love me turned their back on me, but when I got a little buzz in my city, everybody just showed me, fake love. I had to move out of my city because a lot of people envy me. I lost four friends in the last two years.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of?
I’m known for being a rapper in the city called North Miami. The thing I’m most proud of myself is seeing me mature and really wanting to make it with a passion. I been rapping for two-three years. My unique rapping style sets me from an artist, I have my own flow and when you hear me, you could feel me.
What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
I like the vibes, I love the sun, I love the beach, I love the food, I love how it’s different cultures that come together.
I dislike the traffic in Miami.
