Meet Rico Ace

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rico Ace.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I started producing music on fruity loops five back when I was about 12 years old. My cousin showed me how to crack it, and I put it on my Grandma’s desktop in her room. From about 12-15 I would use her computer on my downtime during sports seasons and play around with the sounds. Back then, I really had no idea about music theory and the different elements involved to really compose a song. Around 12, I started writing lyrics also, but they were also very simple and just mostly an emulation of my favorite artists at the time. It wasn’t until around 14 years old when I found out my older brother did music also, but when I did, that really sparked my interest to pursue it more. From 15-17 I would spend a lot of nights remixing any and every instrumental on youtube that I could find. Everything from MF Doom beats to Drake beats. I remember falling asleep in school just because I was up the night before until 3 or 4 am writing on my phone. I remember trying to link up with my friends to make music, but none of them were into it like that. My world mostly revolved around sports at the time, so I did not know many other people my age who were into rapping and making beats. Even though I really did it as a hobby at the time, music was really taking over my life. Fast forward a couple of years later, and I started to love music again after I realized my sports career would be cut short. I went from rapping in the school bus on the way to basketball games now to rapping at college dorm parties. A couple of years after that, I decided to stop going to school and pursue music full time. I started to get back into the production side and also decided to learn how to engineer as well. Now I do freelance engineering and production full time while also working on my brand and as the artist Rico Ace.

Please tell us about your art.
I create all types of music, but if you had to categorize what I mainly do, it would be rap/hip hop. I create music because I feel like music is already flowing through me. I just have to find an outlet to release it. I hope people take away the fact that we are all humans who make mistakes; however, our mistakes do not define who we are. Even though this medium of art is an industry and does consist of business, I would like to show fans that we, as artists, can be genuine and true to ourselves while still providing entertainment. My artwork, especially for albums, is personal and ether means something to me or has a meaning behind it.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The biggest challenge facing artist today is not to fall under pressure by the consumers or big labels that seem to be pushing agendas through their business moves. Sometimes to an artist, it seems like the easier route would be to copy what is working for everyone else instead of creating and leading the way into a new era. This climate might make it seem like music is being oversaturated; however, there has never been a better time to be an artist. It has never been easier to get your music heard even though there are more people trying to do it now than ever.
