Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Wedderburn.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in church, so it has been a major part of my life. Members would always tell me to consider modeling, and it wasn’t until I attended FSU summer of 2015 that I decided to try “this thing out.” I was so anxious because I didn’t know where to start, but I stumbled across a campus organization called Images Modeling Troupe, Inc. (IMT). This was life changing for me because they taught me runway etiquette, and the three C’s “Confidence, Composure, and Consistency.” It was a humbling experience, to say the least. Shortly after joining I attended my first ever model call. I got cast, and I formed relationships I never expected. I made connections with local designers and photographers. I went on to hold executive board positions for IMT. I later discovered that I was quite interested in editorial work as well! I did my first ever shoot (the shot featuring a red fur coat). Since then, I’ve worked and collaborated with photographers in Tallahassee, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and New York. I was recently afforded the opportunity to work with a Vogue Brazil award-winning photographer. Though I’ve never been signed, I’ve made quite a name for myself via Instagram @beautiful.allure. It’s a dream of mine to be featured in a beauty campaign and to one day walk in an NYFW show. I’ve walked in roughly 20 shows since 2015, and I’m ready to take on the industry!
Please tell us about your art.
I model. I do this to create a space for myself to unwind and have fun. I love to embrace my dark skin and slim figure because for many years I was teased for being “too skinny.” I didn’t embrace my features until college. I take my relationship with Jesus very serious, and I want to create a platform to show Christian women that you aren’t limited to what you can achieve or how you should dress to please God. God is at the center of everything I do, even the photoshoot concepts I accept or decline.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success for me would be looking at my work and being proud of it even if no one else liked it. My goal is to be the face of a beauty campaign and that for me would a great representation of success in this aspect of my life. Every day I have to choose to be confident about who God called me to be. I have to be consistent in delivering quality work. I have to be personable when working with others in the industry. I have to be humble. I have to be able to take constructive criticism (in fact, I welcome this).
