Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Lowery.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Well, I fell in love with wardrobing when I was in high school. I was working at BCBG and Pac Sun at the time and was able to gain experience through styling for them. After a while, I felt ready to take the next step, so I moved to Los Angeles where I interned for a fashion house. Nerves Bad Magazine was an idea I had while living in LA and with some tunnel vision, it’s now a published magazine and a brand.
Please tell us about your art.
Nerves Bad Magazine is a window to my wardrobing. A platform to highlight important topics. Vol 1: Disorderly revolves around eight mental disorders. With each disorder, we’ve included anonymous diary entries to grasp various perspectives. Our first issue is a printed publication. Nerves mission is to help spread mental health awareness in a very tasteful and positive way. With every issue sold, we’re donating to The Joy Project to help fight eating disorders. There’s a lot of people who suffer from these mental disorders and may not speak on it, so my friends and I wanted to in our own way.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I feel like the Internet has become a great outlet for artists to showcase their work. The struggle is still real for artists though. Quitting your job and being a full-time artists still comes with its share of hardship. But I mean anything worth having will. It’s important to support fellow artists. If you enjoy what someone does or it makes you feel something, let them know, spread the positive energy.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Vol 1: Disorderly is for sale at etsy.com/shop/nervesbadmag. I made the decision to be a printed publication opposed to an online one because of my love for print. I want our readers to be able to pick up our magazine and enjoy it, maybe leave it on their coffee table. It’s great to support local small businesses (print shops, etc.). You can also find us at @nervesbadmag on Instagram to see what we’re up to.
