Rising Stars: Meet Makeda Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Makeda Brown.

Hi Makeda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is one wrapped up in mental illness and the bare bottom truth that it’s just a daily battle of choosing to believe in yourself.

After having a lot of early childhood trauma, by my early twenties, I was in a deep state of depression. When my firstborn came, it gave me the realization I had been looking for that I couldn’t continue looking at the outside world for things that made me happy. By the time he came, I had been in the same job for almost seven years despite the harmful ways it was contributing to my mental illness and despite how much I knew with everything in me that it was not something that was fulfilling me. Nor was my husband or my child as much as I loved them. He gave me the realization that living life just to live…was not gonna cut it for me.

It wasn’t until my second son was born that I gifted myself the belief that I was allowed to chase after my dreams. Despite what family or society was constantly pumping into my ear. And it was then that I decided to start my business. Because I knew I didn’t want to come off maternity leave and I was tired having anxiety over missing the big moments in my child’s life just because I needed to make a dollar. I was done having set times to wake up, eat lunch and go home. At 29, and after being in the same job for ten years, I had had my fill of the 9-5. As good and reliable as the money was, I decided that the risk on my needs and wants was more important.

So I quit.

I started my own Virtual Assistant business that eventually commuted into a copywriting/content agency business. A business that gave me the freedom to be with my boys and my husband at any time. The freedom to decide how much money I wanted to make without having to nervously ask for a raise. The freedom to pick up and go on a vacation on any whim we chose. The freedom to retire my husband so we could both be home with the boys and so he’d have the freedom to explore his own creative endeavors. But most of all, I bought myself the freedom to write.

Being a writer is something I’ve always wanted to pursue but with working a 9-5, dealing with depression and anxiety, being a mom and wife…the task felt impossible. But once I decided I was in control of what I could do and the freedom I had, I made writing a book that had been on my heart for ten years a focus of what I would accomplish. It’s only because of the freedom of my business and the support of my husband that I was able to accomplish this task in the early months of 2021 and I’m so excited for where it’ll take me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a copywriter and brand voice extraordinaire for creative entrepreneurs. I write copy infused with sales psychology while using brand voice so that audiences can connect with my client in ways that ensure conversion.

Creative writing has always been my talent and I love getting into the mind of my clients and their business so that I can say all the words they just don’t know how to say to their audience.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
