Meet Yve-Car Momperousse of Kreyol Essence in Homestead

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yve-Car Momperousse.

Yve-Car, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My inspiration to start Kreyòl Essence came from a personal “hair catastrophe.” I wore my hair naturally and decided to temporarily straighten it for an event. I went to the nearest hair salon and the beautician applied massive heat to my hair, which gave me the sleek look I wanted. However, when I was ready to return to my natural curls, I discovered my hair was limp, lifeless and breaking severely. I had permanent heat damage. I knew the one thing that could revive my hair was the Haitian Black Castor Oil my mother used on me as a child to strengthen, grow, and moisturize my hair. Unfortunately, it wasn’t readily available in my neighborhood, so I had to ask my mother to send some of her secret stashes. I joked to her that maybe I should bring Haitian Castor Oil to the U.S., My mother, being a serial entrepreneur, recognized the potential of the idea and encouraged me to do some research. Thus, I began the journey of creating Kreyòl Essence As a woman, I have gone through the highs and lows of dealing with my hair, body, and truly accepting myself. I did not want anyone else to suffer, like I did, from not having access to products that help them be the best version of themselves. I am also a certifiable product junkie (PJ). I love quality luxury products, particularly, affordable luxury items. I wanted to help introduce the benefits of a time-honored and proven ingredient in conjunction with delectable creamy butter, fragrant essential oils and exotic ingredients such as Haitian pine nut oil. The exciting thing about our products is that all ethnicities will enjoy our products. Cleopatra was found with Castor beans in her tombstone, women in India, the Philippines, and all over the world have used castor oil. However, it’s been a very refined version of the oil. KE provides an unrefined and organic product that everyone will benefit from.

Has it been a smooth road?
Our main obstacle is a social company. We are dedicated to helping and empowering Haiti in every way possible. With the recent political events occurring on our beloved island, it makes manufacturing and production a bit more difficult, but we remain hopeful and optimistic.

Tell us more about the business.
Kreyòl Essence (KE) is a wellness-based company specializing in organic personal care products authentically made from Haiti. Kreyòl Essence seeks to be a game changing company that represents exotic multicultural products and brands that enhance natural lifestyles and improves the world. Kreyòl Essence draws its inspiration from the timeless ingredients and traditions of the rich culture of Haiti. Originally founded by Taino Natives called “The Good People”, Haiti is home to one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the Caribbean with over 5,600 species of plants living in nine life zones from sea level to mountain tops. Kreyòl Essence has captured the lush plant life of Haiti with its sumptuous collection of natural luxuries for hair, face, and body care. Our ingredients are sustainably harvested from farms in Haiti. Haitian Black Castor Oil has been used in Haiti for centuries for beauty and medicinal purposes.

In Haiti, the elders use a traditional hand processing method that includes roasting, grinding, and cooking the castor seeds. The oil is then triple screen filtered without refining. This method of processing makes Kréyol Essence Haitian Black Castor Oil more beneficial to the hair and skin than mass produced oils and elevates the experience of utilizing the ingredient. No other oil has 80-90% ricinoleic acid which is the key to its ability to promote hair growth, carry essential fatty acids, and moisturize the hair, skin, and body.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The world is becoming more conscious and realizing the need to be more inclusive as the demographics of the country are changing. Now more than ever we are turning towards clean beauty that doesn’t hurt the Earth or one individual health. People are looking towards companies that are sustainable, ethical, clean, in celebration of diversity and cruelty-free such as Kreyol Essence.
