Today we’d like to introduce you to Yaima Victoria Reyes.
Yaima, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Cuba, where I grew up surrounded by the rich colors and vibrant patterns found in its fashion. At the age of ten, my family moved to Kansas City, where the city’s rich history in dressmaking immersed me further into the world of fashion. I then moved to Miami, a city known globally for its beautiful and daring sense of style. It’s here that I began to professionally pursue my passion.
My dedication and grit for fashion have provided me with the opportunity to showcase my work in several fashion shows. I’ve met and worked with many dedicated and wonderful people in the industry. Recently, one of my dresses was worn at the Official Emmy Gifting Suite by fellow designer Mercedes Brunelli, where it got to rub shoulders with the Emmy winners of the night!
It’s been an exciting year and I look forward to continuing the journey that began in Cuba, grew up in Kansas City, and took flight in Miami.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As a mom of two young boys, the road is rarely smooth. I’m lucky to have a dedicated partner (who is also a talented photographer) and family members to help me balance things out while I sew my designs to life.
Please tell us about YaviReyes Fashion House.
I work under my own label, which is YaviReyes. The name is a mix of my name along with my mother’s last name. I specialize in making couture dresses in the vintage styles I grew up with in Cuba and Kansas City mixed with a strong dose of modern flair. My dresses have detailed embellishments and classic cuts, which is what I believe sets me apart from other designers.
