Meet Giuseppe Salamone of Varo Team in South Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giuseppe Salamone.

Giuseppe, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As an accountant and a Co-Founder of Varo Team, I am the son of an entrepreneuring Italian immigrant and second oldest of 43 grandchildren (oldest on my mom’s side). I have always found joy in changing chaos into cleanliness and confusion into clarity and have pursued this through my studies with a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science in Accounting. I am now preparing to sit for the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exam.

With the encouragement of my grandfather (another entrepreneur), I turned my enthusiasm for orderly numbers into a lifeline for other business owners. I started Say Bookkeeping as an unrelated side business at the end of 2017 while working as a Controller for a large healthcare non-profit. However, by the beginning of 2018, I quickly realized there was enough demand to make it a full-time commitment and I left the stability of my Controller position to devote my full energy to Say Bookkeeping.

For small business owners, inadequate bookkeeping and accounting often undercut their business and derail their dreams. To address this, I set to work creating a set of affordable yet critical service offerings that put access to a professional within reach for small business owners. The response was… overwhelming! Word spread quickly and in our first 18 months of operation, the company expanded from a one-person shop serving two local clients to an entire team of professionals meeting the needs of hundreds of businesses nationwide.

During my second year of operating, I met my business partner Helen Kakouris, CPA. Her business provided outsourced CFO services to the same type of client at a different stage of their entrepreneurial journey. Using data compiled through bookkeeping and accounting, she can plan short- and long-term forward-thinking strategies. Her services complimented Say Bookkeeping perfectly, and we began to collaborate on several clients with great success. It was because of the successful collaboration that we decided to officially join forces at the beginning of 2020 and offer a cohesive set of services under the name Varo Team.

Has it been a smooth road?
As a first-time entrepreneur, I had no idea what to expect. The last three years have been a roller coaster of ups and downs. Being an entrepreneur is not for everyone… It takes a lot of hard work, long hours, and no recognition to be successful. My road has been quite bumpy. There have been difficulties in managing expectations, keeping up with ever-expanding demand, and finding the right team to continue to grow. My motivation has always been to support my clients and help them achieve their goals. This has allowed me to power through and overcome any difficulties I’ve faced. I honestly believe motivation must be grounded in something honorable or you will not succeed.

We’d love to hear more about Varo Team.
Varo Team is a bookkeeping, accounting, and CFO advisory startup with a strong focus on maximizing the use of technology to make accounting more efficient. “Varo” is the Italian word for launch and was chosen because it is our mission to prepare you for launch! As a side note, we chose an Italian word because it is the native language of Luca Pacioli, the inventor of double-entry bookkeeping.

Our Vision is to lead the future of accounting through tech-savvy thinkers who solve financial puzzles. We do this by pairing cloud-based accounting technology with skilled professionals who can maximize the use of the software. Think about it; how many cloud-based technologies are on the market which promises they will make your life easier, do your bookkeeping with the few clicks of a button, or provide you with complex analysis in seconds? There are a lot! And most of the promises made are exaggerated because they require a deep understanding of how the system works to produce the expected outcomes.

What sets us apart from other providers is we’ve done the legwork and experimented with a wide variety of technology. We know what works best, and we stay up to date on the latest and greatest so we can proactively bring those solutions to our members.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
It is an exciting time to be a startup in Miami! Miami is pushing to become a global startup hub centered on Latin America and has recently emerged as a national business center ranking with New York and Los Angeles as among the hottest in the country for startup activity. If you are willing to roll up your sleeves and work hard, you can make it here.

However, we have our fair share of challenges. Miami is a young city, and the talent pool is not as deep as in other metropolitan areas. This makes the recruitment of top talent more difficult, though not impossible. Building relationships with the University of Miami and Florida International University have been a great resource for recruiting young and hungry talent.
