Meet Valerie Fuentes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Fuentes.

Valerie, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from Bogota, Colombia and moved to the U.S. nineteen years ago. I’ve always been obsessed with working for myself, so I started my entrepreneurial adventure when I was a kid. I sold candy and sandwiches in middle school and all through high school, until I finally got my first job at the Pembroke Pines mall. I started working at a really young age, which taught me that I could have whatever I set my mind to.

I fell in love with the hospitality industry while going to school. I worked all over South Beach and started bartending on Lincoln Road while I was still underage. It was really fun and I made a ton of money but I always knew that I wanted more. At age 20, I moved to Seattle where I spent most of my 20’s. I went to school for Business Administration at Washington State University and started a career in Human resources at the Boeing Company right after school. From the outside looking in, I was doing really well but behind all the successes, I was really struggling. I was dealing with a diagnosis I did not want to admit.

I started losing my hair in my early 20’s. I was extremely stressed, in a toxic relationship and living in a new city. I believe in my heart that my initial hair loss was due to stress until I was diagnosed with Androgenic Alopecia. Dealing with my hair loss was really rough since the beauty standards in our society tell us that a woman with no hair is not really a woman. I felt I had lost myself and my identity. I went through a really deep depression. I can’t begin to describe what it feels like to learn that you are going to lose your hair at 23 years old. In that process, I learned to love and accept myself besides my physical body. I discovered who I really am and what I’m meant to do. It was that struggle that led me to become who I am today.

By diving deep into personal development, I found myself and my true passion. I started my coaching career in 2012 by coaching executives at Boeing and quickly realized that life-coaching was my calling. In 2013, I moved to Miami to be closer to my family and I’ve continued coaching in South Florida; this time, outside the corporate world with a focus on leadership and self-expression.

Today I serve as the Vice President of Communications for the International Coaching Federation South Florida Chapter, having received my Professional Coaching Certification from the University of Miami. I also have my own private practice in Miami, where my focus is to support women in their journey to becoming who they are meant to be by helping them to release their inner fears and allowing them to be themselves unapologetically in the face of fear.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all. I’ve had many highs but also really low lows. Creating yourself from scratch takes work but that’s the beauty of it. We have the opportunity to create whatever we want for our life, so I did exactly that. I reinvented myself multiple times by moving from coast to coast, changing careers, starting new businesses and learning from my failures. Most of my “business ideas” failed but it was those failures that kept my fire going.

Dealing with Alopecia is heartbreaking and confusing. You never get to understand why this is happening to your body. This journey has taught me invaluable lessons. My focus now is to love myself just the way I am and to teach other women to do the same. My life, my soul and my perspective are forever changed. I want everyone to claim that they are perfect just the way they are.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m a life coach obsessed with teaching women how to be bold and unapologetic. I held back on sharing who I really am for many years. I was busy trying to be perfect and fit into a box. I am planning to use my coaching to change the perspective of beauty and change the association between having hair and being feminine. I’m here to teach you how to let your passion and intuition dictate your decision making because, when we live from our truth and we own who really are, there are no barriers. When we are in alignment with our soul, anything is possible.

Because I know what’s possible when we live from a place of love and not fear, I truly believe we need to educate the next generation that beauty comes from who you are and not from your looks. My passion is to help women release their inner fears so that they can be authentic, confident and free. I’m here to get to know the real you, the you that knows what she’s capable of but is still looking at her life from the stands. I’m here to teach you how to play big, be bold & unleash your unapologetic badass.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m working on season two of my podcast, “Unapologetic Badass.” My plan is to expand my audience and reach as many people as I can. I would like to use this platform to share my message. I want to let my soul and my personality shine through regardless of my diagnosis. I want to give hope to anyone that’s feeling depressed or inadequate. I personally do not believe in western medicine. So even though many doctors have said that alopecia is an autoimmune disease that has no cure, I do believe that I have the power to cure myself.

I’m really proud of how far I’ve come in dealing with my hair loss but the next step is to heal myself. That starts with believing and knowing that I can be healed. Today I work with essential oils, meditation, breath work and sound healing, just to name a few things. I am confident that the moment my mind, my soul and my body are in alignment, my hair will start to grow.
