Today we’d like to introduce you to Winter Raven.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Winter. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started Winter Raven Photography in 2012 when I completed my degree and realized that I needed something meaningful to do with my time.
My significant other had been successfully running his own music label for a few years when we met and I remember him asking me “So, what do you do every day after work?” and I didn’t have a solid answer. He said, “Why don’t you take pictures; I know that you have an eye for the way things look”… but I wasn’t sold on the idea at that moment. I proceeded to figure out on my own what my passion was. I wrote down all the things I believed that I was good at, along with the pros and cons of each and decided that photography was indeed something I could do.
He went half on an entry-level camera with me and I just knew that the day it arrived, I was going to take the most amazing pics! I was so wrong. My first picture sucked terribly and that’s when I realized that it wasn’t so much about an expensive piece of equipment, but rather learning how to use the equipment that really mattered.
From then on, I began teaching myself all that I could about photography. From reading “Nikon for Dummies” at my son’s basketball games to purchasing mini-courses online and watching them on YouTube; eventually flying out to Las Vegas for an amazing workshop that changed the game for me. That’s when I began taking my business seriously.
Since then, it’s been a journey of adventure and growth with many lessons along the way!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I was very fortunate to be embraced by people immediately when I labeled myself a photographer and put it out there to the world. I started booking clients from nearly day one.
The challenge for me came with scaling up, developing my business sense, learning to work with what I had and getting out of my comfort zone in order to be seen and known. I would see other (female) photographers doing amazing things that seemed to come so easily for them and I wanted that for myself. When I began to put myself in the right places and focus on my own journey, rather than where I stood compared to anyone else, I began to elevate.
Most people don’t know that I shot with my entry-level camera all the way up until this year. People didn’t notice and I certainly never mentioned it. Part of me was so self-conscious about it. When I would walk into a room with other photogs who had giant lenses and far more expensive cameras, I felt intimidated… but I was confident in my work.
Today, I’m grateful for that experience because it forced me to be just as good and sometimes better, using what I had. It proved that it’s not the camera… it’s the person behind it who creates the magic.
My advice for other young women starting their journey is to continually seek growth. And no matter where you are in your journey, no matter how little or how much you have, BE SO GOOD that they can’t ignore you!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Winter Raven Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in visual branding for business owners and creative entrepreneurs. I relate to them and I LOVE capturing the essence of who they are and what their brand is about.
I have a signature shoot called a “Branding Session” where I consult with my clients one on one about the vision for their brand and we then shoot a ton of amazing photos that can be used across their social media, website or other platforms. I also throw in some very cool and useful business perks. It’s my #1 most popular session and we have a blast hanging out and creating beautiful images.
I have to say that I’m most proud of the compliments that I get on how natural looking my photos are. It really speaks about who I am not only as a photographer but as a person. I’m a natural, free-spirited and genuine individual, so I really love hearing that I’m able to reflect the same in my work.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
This is kind of left field, but I am a huge fan of real estate podcasts. Like instead of listening to music while I run, I’m listening to people talk about real estate!
I’m also very into self-improvement books, meditation, running, and yoga.
One of my favorite books is The Alchemist, which my nephew gifted to me when I was fairly new on my journey of self-discovery. I recommend anyone to read it. Then, sometime down the road, read it again! 🙂
