Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Baena.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, this is a long story…
I studied Industrial Design back in Colombia and I totally loved the creative part, but I wasn’t happy with the creation of an industrial product. Because of that I never end up working as an Industrial designer, but I got into marketing and I fell in love.
That was my entire life when I was living in Colombia. I discovered how much I loved sales and creating strategies to accomplished my monthly goals. But there’s a moment when you just get tired of following another people’s dreams and fighting for them.
When you have a creative soul, you always dream of having your own project, your own dream.
And then, in the perfect moment, something wonderful happened! I decided to get married with the love of my life and that made me move to Miami. Everything was new and it was perfect to discovered my new passion!
Life put me in my path a beautiful and lovely Brazilian, who ask me to help her sell her fine jewelry and I fell in love with it. It was a big success but sadly she had to leave the business because of personal reasons and then this new project died. I was very sad but happy because I learned so much.
Moving to Miami, being married and all of that was a new beginning for me and now it was time to do what I always loved but I didn’t have the opportunity to do because I was always trapped in an office, working for somebody else. So, my husband and I started to travel a lot. Every month or two, we were exploring different countries and places. That’s our true happiness! Discover new cultures, making new stories together… and then a new idea came into my mind: Buying special pieces to artisans all over the world and sell them here.
My souvenirs are not magnets or little statues; I buy special pieces in local markets, the most incredible accessories and clothing from all over. And people here were so amazed by it when they saw me wearing my treasures (still happens).
Finally, one day, there was a moment of illumination: Why not doing that as a business? And I started just like that, as a “buyer”, to say it in a way, and I was sooooo happy! I did it for almost three years and I really enjoyed.
It was fun but I wanted more, I wanted to help the artisans for real, I wanted to create my own pieces.
I moved to Boston in 2014, everything was so interesting and different, I met people from all over the world. It was the most amazing experience and it was the perfect place to start studying again.
Now, I was very clear about what I wanted, but I want it to do it right. I got into a fashion program and at the same into jewelry classes. Then the universe gave me what I REALLY want it!
That was my true passion! Creating pieces to make women, from all over the world, smile. But not just that, pieces that were made completely by hand, creating jobs for artisans I admired so much in countries like mine., with a real story to tell.
That’s how Jetlagmode was born. Inspired by my travels, created by talented single mothers in Latinamerica to the world.
My first collection was made in Guatemala; creating that was a big challenge. The distance, technology, the timing, and quality, was all difficult but exciting, and I love it.
Now, I have my dream team in my country, with three team leaders and more than 20 artisans.
This is incredible for me, I can’t believe this is even real. Having the opportunity to see these beautiful people grow and learn from them every day is magical. Of course, it’s difficult, the distance is the hardest thing to manage, but we are doing great. Learning from every experience and doing what makes us happy.
Our last challenge was to create pieces that were conscious and respectful with our beloved mother earth and now we have it.
It has been a long but interesting process and now Jetlagmode is what I always want it: A conscious brand that works with eco-friendly materials, made by artisans in Colombia and it’s finally growing.
Now, we want to conquer the world, not as a massive company, but we want to make women happy all over.
We will get there step by step. 🙂
Enjoy this colorful Jetlag!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been hard, very hard! With tears and a lot of smiles, but always exciting.
I’m very clear that this is what I love, so there’s no challenge that I can’t fight. Sometimes, not right away, but the time always comes and the next one nock into my door, but that’s what’s makes it interesting, so NEVER QUIT!
When you discover what you really want to do for the rest of your life, appreciate it. This is one of the hardest things to do in life.
There are always hard times but those are the ones that make us grow, so when a bright idea comes into your mind just do it! Why not right? And don’t think you’re alone, we all have millions of insecurities and weaknesses; it’s impossible to be good at everything… that’s life. Go step by step and find the right team to grow organically.
We all can do it!
We’d love to hear more about JETLAGMODE.
Accessories! This is what I love the most, this is what comes naturally for me to create. But not just any accessory, I love statement and colorful pieces, that makes my clients feel powerful and gorgeous.
My superpower is to create pieces made with beads and threads. There’s something very special about my pieces and is that you can easily recognize that is JETLAGMODE. The style, the colors. the textures are different than other brands, that’s why always stands out when you wear them (or when you see them in a store).
Creating a product that people in the streets recognize, has been incredible to me. The concept of what a Jetlagmode’s piece is; that mix between artisanal work and luxury. That’s what makes me feel so proud because we really are unique!
Which women have inspired you in your life?
My artisans! They’re my motivation, the reason why this dream exists.
I remember many years ago, watching these powerful women carrying their babies in the back, hiking mountains, working in the streets to give their whole family something to eat that night.
The strength and discipline, the deep passion and respect for their culture and technics; for these and many other reasons they are my forever inspiration.
