Meet Teana McDonald of 3E Connections in Fort Lauderdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teana McDonald.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am originally from Brentwood, New York and moved to South Florida in 1994 right after I graduated from High school. I attended the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and a Master’s Degree from University of Phoenix in e-commerce. I always had a passion for fashion, lifestyle brands and storytelling. I worked in retail for brands like Neiman Marcus, Donna Karan and Eddie Bauer for 10 years. I transitioned from retail to education teaching Computer & Business Skills to high school students for 4 years.

Teaching was a wonderful experience but it wasn’t my calling. After teaching I worked for Fidelity in merchant processing and gift cards as a Client Services Manager then eventually became an Account Manager for Travelex, a well know international company. 5 years of the cubicle life was enough for me so I took a consultant position working from home for MasterCard. During the many years of working in the corporate world I always dabbled in the marketing industry and had a side hustle. I was laid off after a year of working with MasterCard and decided to go full force with my own business. The first business was a personal shopping service, the second business was children’s hair accessories and the last and final business was a full service marketing firm (not full service when I started out). From the two unsuccessful businesses I learned that I was great at building a brand and creating a buzz. I took those skills and launched 3E Connections, Inc, which has been around for almost 10 years.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely, not. Looking back I appreciate all of those bumps and fear of the unknown. Not knowing when or how you’re going to get your next client, attending and joining tons of networking groups, bootstrapping your business and not having enough cash flow and working 12, 14, 15 hour days to make sure the job gets done. Spending money on the wrong tools and resources because you don’t know what you don’t know.

I remember working out of a loft from home and wondering if I’ll ever get out of this space, have an office and hire some employees. Those times were rough but I made it through. It was the belief and vision that I had for my brand and my business.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
Great question! I was a boy crazy, social butterfly that loved fashion. I thought I was going to stay in New York and go to school in the city and hang with my girls. I wanted to be Régine from Living Single or Tracee Ellis Ross from Girlfriends. I was raised by a single mom that worked nights as a Sergeant in New York City. My teenage years were difficult for her but full of adventure for me. I was extremely lucky to have such an amazing upbringing and do not regret a thing.
