Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Filgueiras, LCSW, CCATP.
Tamara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Brazil; and moved to the United States at the age of 13. As far as I can remember, I have always been curious about people; an observer who would notice and have regard for people’s emotions. As I grew up, I realized that I could turn my passion of helping people into a career of creating space for them to process through their vulnerabilities, challenges, and connect with their strengths; which is the definition of Psychotherapy in a nutshell. I became a therapist; and have worked in many settings ranging from hospitals, agencies, clinics, and substance abuse centers where I have “walked with people” during their difficult times. I have gone through a few challenging times of my own; and one of the most challenging was going through cancer. I had to intensely put into practice many of the skills I had shared with clients in therapy. One day, I had planned that once making it through that challenge, I would create an Oasis… where others could focus on helping themselves as well. This is how Oasis Counseling & Wellness was created; which is my counseling private practice, where we create space to focus on healing, overcoming, and growing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. When I look back at my life, I see many things. Many challenges, doubts, heartaches, but also courage, hope, sweat, and triumph. From adapting as an immigrant, going through cancer twice, navigating through treatments, divorce, and other curveballs, I have also learned that we are all stronger than we know.
Please tell us about Oasis Counseling & Wellness – what should we know?
Oasis Counseling & Wellness is a labor of hope and love. Clients have referred to it as their sacred space where they learn to connect with a part of themselves that they were not aware existed. It is a space where we organize thoughts and feelings; and learn to connect with who we really are. There, I offer individual, couples, and family counseling; as well as workshops on various topics. I specialize in treating anxiety, stress, depression, and trauma. In order to provide the best services possible, I focus on continuously improving my therapeutic skills through trainings and certifications. I always offer clients the opportunity to learn how the brain and mind work as part of the therapeutic process. True transformation and growth go way beyond coping; and it is important to learn how the experiences we go through are processed, interpreted, and stored in the brain. Not only do I utilize various treatment modalities, but we can also incorporate mindfulness, meditation, and aromatherapy into the therapy process.
I also find that transformation and personal growth are magnified when we as individuals choose to look deeper into our “souls or essence.” Let’s say, I have one foot in the neuroscience world; and one foot into the “soul” world. The combination of both usually unlocks many doors within us.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Recognizing when I’m uncomfortable and vulnerable; and processing through my discomfort so I don’t limit my opportunities and decisions due to fear or feeling uncomfortable.
