Meet Samantha Caballero of Swim with Sam in Broward

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Caballero.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Samantha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have always worked in the education field, either in the classroom or the water. I taught my first swim at the age of 10 to a 6-year-old girl. She mastered the technique in two months and joined a swim team winning 1st place in her first meet. Professionally, I began teaching lessons at 16 during an internship at a swim school. That transitioned into a swim coach position, and then I moved into private lesson instruction exclusively for a few years. It was always a job I would do as a part-time opportunity, but I never planned to be a swim instructor as a long-term profession. My entire life I wanted to work in non-profit, dedicated to social services, community development, and uplifting communities of color. But when I finally started my first non-profit job, which I thought was going to be the start of my career, they fired me after my first week. I had a feeling it wasn’t going to work out. So, my last day there, I spoke with God and said, “Lord, if this job doesn’t work out, I’m going to take swimming seriously and work for myself.” That Friday morning, by 10am, I was let go, by 2 pm, I registered my business with the state of Florida. By Monday morning, I was approved and I’ve never looked back. I’ve been all in since July 2nd, 2018.

Has it been a smooth road?
My biggest struggle was learning how to run a business. I never planned to be self-employed. I didn’t prepare or do any research, this just happened! Learning how to unlearn bad behaviors that would destroy my company. It was as if someone dropped a newborn baby in my lap and said, “Here.” All of a sudden, I’m a parent, and my child’s name is Swim with Sam. I had to change my lifestyle and be that parent. My first year was dedicated to hustling. I was teaching lessons from 7am to 9pm sometimes to pay my bills. But those bumpy roads taught me understand my finances, marketing, content creation, organization skills, building a brand, scaling, product production, literally everything. Failure truly is your best teacher.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! South Florida is the perfect area for swim lessons. Every single person should know how to swim. It’s a safety hazard if you don’t. We’re surrounded by water where boat rides, beach visits, jet skis, pool parties, and traveling to Caribbean is normal. If you don’t know how to swim, you’re risking your life.
