Today we’d like to introduce you to Susana Toledo.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up we always had a camera around and had (have) albums and boxes and more boxes of photos to flip through. One of the first things my husband and I first did when we first started dating was get a film camera and it was with us always; making memories. We eventually bought a digital SLR and started working shooting lowriders and models for nationally published car magazines. In 2009, when my twin boys were born, they were an instant inspiration! I moved on to not only photographing my kiddos, but other children and families. I studied and have taken safety courses to specialize in Newborn photography – those first few days are purely magical. In 2014, I dove into Underwater Portraiture and I absolutely LOVED it. It just confirms, I’m part mermaid.
Please tell us about your art.
I absolutely love documenting growing little ones. From birth to the first few days, to that sitting milestone, first foods and first steps – I think it’s something beautiful to have and look back on. Babies grow and change so fast. Those details are forever beautiful, so why. not have them forever? The same goes for the way see ourselves, as women. Very quickly it can vary, depending on the situation or day – and making portraits of women (underwater or on-land) when they’re feeling beautiful and strong and confident is a way for them to look back and feel that way again. Or rather, it can solidify what a Rockstar they know they are. I want the photos I make of you and the ones you love most, make you feel the love, happiness, confidence, and magic that you already have within you. I offer prints with all of my sessions. I want my clients and their future generations to have boxes and albums they can flip through, like I did growing up – it’s the best feeling them in your hands, isn’t it?
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
100% – go with what you feel is right for YOU. Don’t feel you have to do what someone else is doing, because it’s working for them. Don’t feel your style needs to look like theirs. Don’t feel your equipment needs to match or beat theirs. Believe in yourself, listen to yourself and the rest will follow.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
