Meet Susan Pavao of Kindermusik with Miss Susan in Boca Raton and Parkland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Pavao.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been drawn to music my whole life but I never imagined that my love for music and children would come together due to a personal tragedy! My husband, myself and our son (who was 8 years old) moved to South Florida in 1993 from Seattle, Wa after our 4-year-old son died suddenly.

My parents and sister with her family lived in Boca Raton and everyone thought it would be better for us to live near family as we struggled to overcome our grief and try to rebuild our life. We settled into jobs and had another child, our 3rd son in 1995. I wanted to stay home with my son so I started working part-time at different music jobs. My sister saw a flyer at the school where she worked about kindermusik and immediately told me I should look into it. I wasn’t sure but at the last minute, I decided to register for a workshop in Palm Beach Gardens.

I fell in love with the concept and once I was licensed I started a small class with 5 of my friends with babies. I asked Kol Tikvah where I was doing Hebrew School music if I could use a space there. I would practice at home with my then 3-year-old son to get the flow of the class and see how he responded to the activities. The first classes were great and each session I would add another class.

After 5 years I decided to drop all my various music jobs and teach Kindermusik full time! I now average 120-150 families who come through my classes each week.

Has it been a smooth road?
As with any business, there was a learning curve. I was steadily growing each year and I was able to add 2 other locations in Boca but I was affected by the recession in 2009. Also after my husband died in 2010 I was very overwhelmed but I was thankful to have my Kindermusik classes and their unwavering support during that time!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I run mommy and me type music classes for children newborn- 3 years. I also teach private guitar-piano lessons in the afternoons for school-age children. I really love that I am able to spend every day bringing music to children in a positive, age-appropriate way!

I have many families that bring all their children to me and tell their friends about my classes. I also love that the majority of my private students started out as babies in my Kindermusik classes so I have known them their whole lives and have watched them grow into wonderful young ladies and gentlemen!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boca and Parkland are both very family oriented with good schools and are wonderful places to raise children. My business has thrived here. I believe any quality children’s program would do well here.
