Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Rhonda Freeman.
Dr. Freeman, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always been a nurturer, and I never tried to fight it. I love taking care of people, and if I can, I try to leave them better off than I found them. So going into psychology was a natural fit for me.
I have a strong passion for neuroscience, physical fitness, and advocating for the mistreated. Through my experiences as an NFL cheerleader (Dolphins & Eagles), my work in neuropsychology with patients, and supporting survivors of domestic abuse online – I have been able to fulfill those ambitions!
Outside of my practice at Sunrise Medical Group, I’m focused on my educational website Neuroinstincts. There I help victims of abuse, particularly with partners demonstrating personality disorders such as malignant narcissism/ narcissistic personality disorder or psychopathy. Unlike other domestic abuse resources, I give my website visitors information from a neuroscience angle. In that way, they can understand many of the common brain reactions to trauma, abuse, aggression, and manipulation.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In every business there are obstacles and struggles. Across the past several years there have been many changes in the healthcare industry that have negatively impacted doctors and how we practice. I’m certain there will be more to come. However, we’re fortunate that Sunrise Medical Group | TFPS has an outstanding team of business specialists to guide us so we can maintain our focus on our patients.
Sunrise Medical Group | Tenet Florida Physician Services – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sure, I’d love to tell you about our company! Sunrise Medical Group is a practice that has been fortunate to gather a team of some of the sharpest minds in neuroscience. We provide our patients with various facets of neurology all under one roof.
Our departments include general neurology, neuropsychology, neurosurgery, neurodiagnostic testing (e.g., MRI, EEG, EMG), neuro-ophthalmology, and physical therapy. We can take care of our clients as a team, which in my opinion generates better outcomes for our patients.
I’m a neuropsychologist within the group, and my role is the assessment of a patient’s thinking, behavior, and mood in association with their medical condition. The tests I use allow us to make decisions regarding the presence of a disorder (e.g., dementia).
Neuropsychological evaluations are typically lengthy (e.g., 4 or more hours); however, the results help nail down the underlying reason for a person’s struggle. For example, we typically will not only learn that a person has dementia, but also the type of dementia disorder (e.g., frontotemporal, Alzheimer’s, etc.). This is invaluable information as it will guide the treatment approach of the neurologist.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success? Well, I’m a very intuitive person, so genuine connections are more valuable than anything for me and create ‘little’ successes every day!
But overall, I define success as trying even when I am afraid, standing up for something bigger than myself, or fighting for the mistreated and abused. It is laughing and dancing without inhibition, doing work I am proud of, having financial resources to take care of myself and family, and the presence of love from a few special people.
Essentially enjoying life and leaving a positive mark on the world.
