Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Cabeza.
Steve, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We started in 2008 and are in our 10th year of business. We have a number of repeat, long-term clients. We have a diverse client portfolio. We excel in video marketing. We started in a down economy. A bootstrapped operation. And now we proudly call the 5th largest global aerospace and defense corporation one of our clients. We are blessed, and thankful and we are who you want to work with. We are cost-conservative, creative, diligent, relentless, focused and engaged. We live what we do.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Amplification Inc. started as rockily as you can imagine. It was 2008 and things were gloomy. The economy was imploding. Banks were crashing. Large corporations folded. Ponzi-schemes were rampant. I was laid off repeatedly, including from the best job I ever had, pay and benefits-wise. That was at University of Miami Hospital.
I was the Director of Marketing and Public Relations for about 16 months at University of Miami Hospital. I was hired to help the marketing and PR department at UMH and work in concert with the UHealth System (Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miller School of Medicine, Sylvester Cancer Center, etc.).
I was also slated to helm an evolving digital media department. And subsequently they sent me near and far to conferences, seminars and cavalcades of digital insight. I returned the favor by getting the system onto Channel 4. And then I was fired. And that was the best thing that ever happened to me.
Because ever since I did my first video opinion piece for “Critical Condition,” I knew video was where it was. And digital, too. Thanks Sunshine Media / True North!
So I found my “work-wife” – my business partner Marnie S. Hoppe, and we got to work. Well, she kicked the tires and lit the fires and then we caught fire.
It wasn’t easy. We had no money, the economy sucked, no one was lending, no one was buying, social and digital was too new, eek! About 3 years in we had a really, really trying moment. Within 2 days, both of our cars died. Permanently, Irrevocably. That was insurmountable. Disheartening. De-motivating. I was already hurting and in debt and yet, here we are. BAM!
Keep your mind right. Stay focused. Believe. Keep working. If you want it BAD enough, you will get it.

What were you like growing up?
I like to laugh. And drink. And selectively socialize. So, I have the reputation of being the life of the party. Or the happiest guy there. Or the one that drank the most. Or the most quick-witted or first to stand up to a bully.
I grew up in Miami. My dad paid his way through University of Miami by spearfishing. Then went on to serve in the United States Coast Guard and the Central Intelligence Agency, fighting the Cold War against our long-time adversaries, the Russians.
I learned how to fish, dive, boat, swim, drink, laugh and confidently and comfortably enjoy life and people in a household that was like Ricky and Lucy. Spanish and Irish Redneck. Wouldn’t have it any other way. Miami is for me. I am a Keys rat. And Boston Whaler Boy. I know how to wield a H’awaiin Sling. I know how to run our Florida Straits.
