Meet Stephannye Cruzatt of Cram Coach Tutoring in Kendall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephannye Cruzatt.

Stephannye, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Hello, my name is Stephannye Cruzatt, I’m the founder of Cram Coach Tutoring a private SAT Test Prep Company located in Miami Florida. I originally grew up in Miami and went to Florida International University for a degree in Business/ International Relations. It was during my senior year of college that I had acquired an internship in Washington D.C. and decided to transfer there. Aside from working I also had to continue my studies in Washington D.C. so I decided to take an “Entrepreneurial Business Class” as an elective which was a topic that I was greatly fond of and always sparked my interest. We were asked to come up with a business idea and all the logistics behind implementing it in the real world. This is when I thought of merging one of my greatest hobbies which was tutoring students (a side job that I had become accustomed to doing almost all my life) and use it for my business model. My team was composed of 3 International students in the program from Japan, Taiwan and Brazil
who also put their thoughts on a Domestic & International approach to the tutoring business.

My mentor liked my business idea so much she entered me into a “Business Pitch Competition” where I had to explain the business idea to a panel and compete with other students/local entrepreneurs. I was only 21 at the time and although I was confident of my business idea, I didn’t think I stood a chance compared to other professional services that were competing against me. My business idea excelled and impressed the judges so much that and I ended up winning the competition and this was the start of Cram Coach Tutoring! Upon my return to Miami, I graduated from Florida International University and with nothing else to lose I immediately implemented my business idea. At only 22 years old, I had an idea that had an enormous potential.

Fast forward, today I have a team of five tutors where they all have been trained under my “Cram Coach Tutoring” methodology to teach the way I would. We have had major success helping students from all of the Private and Public Miami Dade County High Schools. We have helped countless students earn the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship and be admitted into the University of their dreams. I never imagined my business becoming this successful in such a short amount of time, it goes to show hard work does pay off!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh boy! This has been a roller coaster! My business solely relied on me in the beginning years, where many entrepreneurs can relate that “your business becomes your life”. I’m very fortunate I found my calling at a young age but it has required a lot of work. Some personal struggles were figuring out a healthy work-life balance. My business requires a lot of my time so learning how to delegate to my assistants was a challenge! Having a strong team helped manage my work-life balance and relieve some stress.

Please tell us more about your business.
Of course! So everyone who meets me knows how passionate I am about helping my students. It is one of my favorite topics to talk about whether at a dinner party or any social event. I love to talk about the educational structure in Miami and how challenging the recent College Admission process has become! My business is best known for private one-on-one tutoring this means we really get to know our students. I prefer the aspect of private tutoring because we get to work at their pace and the student in return become more comfortable and less shy to ask us questions, this is how we see outstanding results. I take my business very personally because only for a short amount of time these students, from wherever they’re coming from, become OUR students and I feel it is my responsibility to leave a positive mark. I have worked with students from all types of backgrounds and I’ve seen personal struggles in some of these kids. I have had students who recently immigrated from Venezuela, Cuba or other countries join my program and we have helped guide them in the right direction. I have also had students who were extremely ambitious with soaring high GPA’s and become admitted into Harvard and John Hopkins along with many prestigious Honors Programs at FIU, UM, UF and more. I have also had many students with high GPA’s and excellent grades yet are filled with anxiety and not good test takers. I tell all the students, “this is only a standardized exam so it does not determine how smart you really are, it does not measure all the levels of intelligence, just take it as another goal you need to achieve and move on” this lifts their spirits and helps them focus on the goal. Working with students and having compassion from where they are coming from has helped me develop a different outlook in life. I feel the proudest when students text message me or come back to visit me with their SAT score or their College Acceptance and credit my business for helping them.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I personally define success as finding a passion and making a living out of it. Although tutoring was only a hobby for me, little did I know it was my calling! This job has brought me tremendous amount of joy and pride in myself. Loving what you do and bringing the best version of yourself to the table is my definition of success. Having a small positive role in my student’s life whether it was guiding them, helping them achieve their overall goal or just being patient in teaching them what they didn’t learn at school is what my business is about.
