Meet Stephanie Lopez of A Design In Between in Normandy Isles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Lopez.

Stephanie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.

Hello there, my name is Stephanie! A Texas native, living in Miami Beach. Ever since I can remember, art, design, and fashion have had a strong presence in my life. However, never in my wildest dreams did I think I would make it a career, it was just something that I did. For a while, I thought I wanted to be a dietitian but soon realized that was not my path. After a lot of soul searching and with the support of my partner and family, I decided to switch majors and studied the art of Graphic Design at Miami Dade College.

Once I graduated, I was eager to start designing and jump into the design world. From there, A Design In Between was born. My bartending job at the time had given me the flexibility and opportunity to fund my own business, so I did. My first couple of projects consisted of logo work and soon evolved that to creating brand identities. However, something was missing, I knew I wanted to incorporate fashion into my work, and there grew my love for digital pattern designs for sustainable fabrics. Sustainability plays a big role in A Design In Between. I love nature and wanted to find a way to create less waste with my designs and create awareness. It has been such a rewarding process so far, and being able to help others bring their vision to life through my designs has brought me immense delight.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Starting up a business on my own has not been a smooth road. I did not start knowing it all and learned many lessons along the way, which I am grateful for. It’s a path that continuously pushes me to improve my skills and knowledge, which I enjoy. It’s a sweet and sour process that I have learned to trust. Now with the current pandemic, my bartending job was put on hold. This made me realize that it was time to take on the challenge of making that jump to the next level. I am now dedicating my full time to A Design In Between and wouldn’t want it any other way!

Please tell us about A Design In Between.

A Design In Between specializes in Brand Identity + Surface Pattern Design + Sustainability. My work consists of mindfully crafting memorable designs. When it comes to Brand Identity, I don’t just create pretty logos. I help you better identify your purpose, vision, mission, brand voice, and values to build a brand with a strong foundation.

The art of creating Digital Seamless Pattern Designs has to be my favorite. The process of the surface pattern design begins with a sketch/painting on paper and then transformed into a seamless digital pattern to be placed onto surfaces like natural, sustainable textiles or print on demand items. A Design In Between offers minimal designs that use less ink and print on natural/recycled fabrics for minimal impact.

What sets A Design In Between apart and I am most proud of is that I design with the earth in mind. As a designer, I feel I have an obligation to craft responsibly and take into consideration my impact on the environment. I aim to provide you with eco-friendly options when available, allowing you to have designs that are aligned with your values.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?

Spending time exploring outdoors collecting; flowers and leaves to press in books, drawing my favorite cartoons and characters, and spending countless hours in my grandmother’s sewing room and playing with her fabric scraps. I couldn’t choose one. These are my favorite memories that have influenced the path I am pursuing today.
