Today we’d like to introduce you to Sima Kohen.
Sima, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am originally from Turkey with two majors in Hotel Management and French Litterature. Additionally, I was fortunate to be offered a scholarship to Cornell University, which saw me welcomed into the United States in 2000. I then returned to the U.S. in 2001 after getting married and had my two sons here.
Real Estate was the path I decided to take in 2003, once I had my firstborn. It would afford me the flexibility I needed in my schedule to juggle a career and motherhood. Being fully motivated and having a terrific background from a long career in Hotel Management as an executive, I was ready to tackle real estate with EWM, in Miami Beach. I chose a partner to team up with, that I had known from before, and from the get-go, we were signing both residential and commercial real estate.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was not smooth at all. With the 2007 crash, it was almost impossible to succeed in real estate or even make a steady living, which led me to look for alternatives. Our winning streak crashed when the market saw its downfall in 2007. I continued with my passion for real estate but decided on pursuing a more lucrative position, since the unpredictable market couldn’t offer me a steady influx of income. Being great in sales, I was offered an opportunity with Aventura Magazine as an account executive while still being able to have the time out of the office to dedicate to real estate. As I focused on my incredible position at the prestigious magazine, I managed my success with many clients from all over the world for real estate transactions, simultaneously. Repeat clients in real estate, for me, represent the epitome of complete client satisfaction. Honesty and my educated opinion drive my clients’ trust in me. Financial sense and a return on investment are factors I prioritize for all my buyers and investors. What truly drives me is enjoying what I am doing as I strive for my investors’ and clients’ whole satisfaction in both commercial investing and residential end-users. In this way, they are thankful, remember me, refer me and come back to continue with more business prospects.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
About three years ago, a complicated and large commercial transaction left its mark with me. As the buyer’s representative for two partners, I had the task of convincing all separate unit owners of the building (a total of 40) to sell. This consisted of meetings which were conducted in English and Spanish, which required a 75% minimum approval in order to move forward with the sale. I accomplished this seemingly impossible mission and closed the transaction in 45 days. Many know I sold a $40M property, while my reality was selling 40 homeowner’s apartments in 45 days. My knowledge, expertise, confidence and experience paid off.
In the past sixteen years in real estate, Miami has changed quite a bit. The Miami that I know from when I arrived here, is so different than today. It is growing and expanding daily, improving neighborhoods and creating new trends. Miami is still the number one destination on the map in the U.S. for both investing and visiting. Being in a multicultural melting pot of a location, I feel very comfortable with my knowledge of different languages, which plays a big role in my success. I bring unmatched passion and knowledge of Miami real estate to the table while consistently practicing my motto, “I do not sell or buy anything I would not buy for myself”. I am honored by feeling trusted by my clients and uphold that in every relationship. Miami is the Sunshine State that offers year-round sunshine. Which is also what I offer my clients, a little bit of that sunshine every day. I am committed to my clients and I do all the analysis and research until there is a perfect match for them. I am like a matchmaker and commit to do a lot of research. While a commitment to professional excellence remains one of my top priorities, my success is attributed to treating my clients as though they are family. Mastering different skill sets; negotiation, pricing strategies, market knowledge, excellence in customer service, allows me to educate both buyers and sellers. With this reputation, my name is sought after. I am both flattered and energized receiving calls from everywhere, asking for Sima Kohen, because they heard positive results are my reality. My client roster includes government officials, celebrities and business professionals, whom all end bringing me more business, solidifying my stellar reputation.
I have been doing Real Estate for over sixteen years and will continue to do so as long as I can. I am also still working at Aventura Magazine as a Senior Account Executive for twelve years now as the top producer, and am always available for your real estate needs too. I speak fluent Turkish, English, Spanish and French. My license is currently with Aventura Real Estate.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I like to maintain a consistent level of productivity and take both my successes and failures in stride. I try to learn from both and apply that knowledge to future situations.
For me, success is about doing my job well. I want to be recognized as someone who always does her best and puts forth efforts to surpass my goals.
I tend to view success incrementally. As someone who is invigorated by new and complex challenges, I always want to be the one to continue to learn and achieve. If over the course of my career, I can be satisfied with having learned something new or useful, it translates as success to me.
